"Sherman Avenue welcomes all people. They've never referred to us
as 'you
people'-that would have shown that they didn't really accept us." â
Pastor
Luke Thao, who started a Hmong ministry

Hmong churches embrace multicultural ministry

ST. PAUL, Minn. (UMNS) â Hmong congregations are embracing the
movement to
multicultural ministry, as second generations growing up in the
United
States become used to experiencing many cultures in their schools
and
communities. Their growing sense of the need for a broader
community to
address these issues was evident in a recent meeting in St. Paul
of some 100
members of the Association of Hmong United Methodist Churches.

Number of General Conference delegates stays same

PANAMA CITY, Panama (UMNS) â The Rev. L. Fitzgerald Reist
announced today
that the number of delegates for the 2012 General Conference will
be near
   the 1,000-delegate limit.

"Although a variety of opinions have been expressed, I've heard
strong pleas
to retain similar numbers as before, and I believe any significant
reduction
in the number of delegates should occur in concert with a more
comprehensive
look at the whole process," said Reist, who is secretary of the
quadrennial
legislative gathering. "It's essential that we not undermine the
level of
trust. With so many substantive changes expected to be considered
during the
2012 General Conference, it is important to avoid any perception
that a
reduction in the number of delegates might somehow be intended to
influence
   outcomes."

The exact number of delegates will not be available until
calculations have
been completed, but the secretary of each annual (regional)
conference will
be notified by Dec. 1 how many delegates their conference will
have. General
Conference will meet in Tampa, Fla., in spring 2012.

Church files suit to reclaim property

ONTARIO, Ore. (UMNS) â The United Methodist Oregon-Idaho Annual
(regional)
Conference filed a lawsuit Nov. 3 against Ontario Community
Church Inc., an
independent non-denominational church in Ontario, its corporate
directors,
and its pastor. The complaint contends that members of the church
did not
have the right to take United Methodist Church property and divert
it for
use as a non-denominational church. In addition to the church
building
itself, the lawsuit calls for the turnover of bank accounts and
other
property in the building including historic documents and
membership
   records.

Last June, members of the Ontario Community United Methodist
Church took the
property and began operating as Ontario Community Church Inc.,
according to
the complaint. The lawsuit was filed in Malheur County Circuit
Court.

400-plus gather to witness ecumenical milestone

NEW ORLEANS (UMNS) â More than 400 people of faith, including
United
Methodists, are expected to gather Nov. 9-11 at the Marriott New
Orleans to
celebrate a century of ecumenical engagement and to discuss how
the churches
might live and work together in an uncertain future.

The Centennial Gathering of the National Council of Churches and
Church
World Service will mark the centennial anniversary of the 1910
World Mission
Conference in Edinburgh, Scotland, an event many church historians
regard as
the beginning of the modern ecumenical movement. One of the
highlights of
the event will be the presence of a delegation from the Cuban
Council of
Churches, and considerable attention will be paid to the setting
in New
Orleans, five years after Hurricane Katrina. A complete schedule
can be
   found at [17]www.ncccusa.org/witnesses2010.
