On the final day of their recent fall meeting, more than 80 active and retired bishops also agreed to a planned campaign for humane immigration reform in 2011, including daily prayer for reform that âreunifies families and provides a pathway to legal status for undocumented immigrants.â [15]Read full story and post a comment» Congo bishop to receive peace award NEW YORK (UMNS) â United Methodist Bishop Nkulu Ntanda Ntambo, Democratic Republic of Congo, will receive the 2010 Peacemaker in Action award from the Tanenbaum organization during a Nov. 11 reception in New York. He also will speak about his efforts to build sustainable peace in his countryâs Katanga province. The bishop has helped reduce the recruitment of child soldiers by organizing care for street children, assisted internally displaced persons, created an agricultural training center and built brick churches as a physical sign of permanence and commitment. Tanenbaum is a secular organization that promotes interreligious understanding. Commission on Religion and Race awards grants WASHINGTON (UMNS) â The United Methodist Commission on Religion and Race has announced grants totaling $296,000 to support nine projects aimed at services that advocate for the rights, human dignity, and inclusion of racial/ethnic groups, immigrants and refugees. The nine one-year grants, ranging from $10,000 to $40,000, were awarded to Austin Immigrant Rights Coalition, Austin, Texas; Justice for Our Neighbors Southeastern Michigan; Central Florida Justice for Our Neighbors, Orlando; Immigration, Asylum and Refugee Legal Clinics of Northern Illinois Conference, Elgin, Ill.; New York Annual Conference, Justice for Our Neighbors Project, Brooklyn; Rosewood United Methodist Church, Justice for Our Neighbors, Los Angeles; Staunton District United Methodist Church, Casa De Amistad, Waynesboro, Va.; Student Action with Farm Workers, Into the Fields Program, Durham, N.C.; and Valley Interfaith Project, Phoenix. Board seeks ethnic young adult interns WASHINGTON (UMNS) â A Jan. 10 application deadline is looming for the nine-week 2011 Ethnic Young Adult Summer Internship in Washington, sponsored by the United Methodist Board of Church and Society. The program is designed for people ages 18-22 who have an interest in exploring issues of public policy, social justice advocacy and social change, and who represent one of the five ethnic minority caucuses of The United Methodist Church: Native Americans, Pacific-Islanders, Hispanic/Latinos, African Americans and Asian Americans.
