"Thank you for the supply of phone cards. They save lives, save
marriages,
keep children in touch with parents, bring hope to the lonely and
support to
the frightened. They connect us with the people we love." - Letter
from a
military chaplain in response to the Phone Cards for Military
program.

Technology replaces military phone-card program

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) - The world back in 2003 was quite
different from
the world today. No Facebook or Twitter. No one had yet heard of
Lady Gaga
or "The Situation." People used phones exclusively for placing
calls. Plenty
of things were not as they are now, but one fact has endured: The
people of
The United Methodist Church have always reached out those who are
in need.
Thus, on Veteran's Day 2003, the long-running Phone Cards for
Military
program began. This year, it will end.

Holy Land pilgrimage designed for young clergy

WASHINGTON (UMNS) - The United Methodist Board of Church and
Society is
organizing a 2011 pilgrimage to the Holy Land just before the
beginning of
the Lenten season. The trip, Feb. 23-March 5, is designed
especially for
young clergy, although not limited to them. "A high-quality Holy
Land
pilgrimage is bound to significantly impact one's ministry for
years to
come," said the Rev. Neal Christie, a board executive, who can be
contacted
for more information at [20][email protected].

Bill Cosby to speak at Lambuth fundraiser

JACKSON, Tenn. (UMNS) - Lambuth University, a United
Methodist-affiliated
school, will present "An Evening with Bill Cosby" at 7:30 p.m.
April 5 at
the Carl Perkins Civic Center in downtown Jackson. Campus
officials say the
fundraiser will help launch Architects of Promise, a three-year,

improvements. General admission tickets cost $50 and go on sale
Nov. 15.
