Winter threatens flood victims in Pakistan NEW YORK (UMNS)âRamzan, a 15-year-old from the Sindh region in Pakistan, is struggling to survive losses that most adults would find difficult to bear. He lost both parents to illness nearly two years ago. Then, the floods that inundated Pakistan this summer washed away the home where he had cared for his six younger siblings. Now, the children are living among other families displaced by the floods in a tent provided by Church World Service. (UMNS)â Among the 165,000 who live on New Mexicoâs Navajo Nation reservation, half are unemployed. Most jobs are with government agencies, and most of the income is spent beyond tribal borders. Navajos are more likely than the average American to die of diabetes, suicide, homicide, pneumonia or influenza. RethinkChurch.org launches Nov. 12 NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS)â The denominationâs revamped website for young-adult spiritual seekers, [20]RethinkChurch.org, will debut Friday, Nov. 12. Rethink Church, the next evolution of The United Methodist Churchâs âOpen heartsâ welcoming and advertising campaign, highlights the many opportunities available within United Methodist churches to engage with the worldâfrom literacy programs to feeding the poor. RethinkChurch.org features more engagement capabilities and content offerings than its seeker site predecessor, 10thousanddoors.org. Visitorsmay read, watch, comment and interact on topics that are important both to them and to The United Methodist Churchâfrom the environment, to global health, to disaster relief. Correction: Bishops and accountability report The Nov. 4 story, "Bishops support church reforms, accountability," should not have said the United Methodist Council of Bishops supported dismissal for ineffective clergy and sanctions for under-performing bishops. Those measures were included in the Call to Action Steering Team Report as illustrative examples of accountability but were not part of the specific recommendations that the bishops considered and acted upon. (UMNS)âWhen most people think about human slavery, AIDS and devastating childbirth injuries, a festival doesn't usually come to mind. But Susanne Ziskis and other members of her spiritual group "Evening Dialogue" at Ridgewood United Methodist Church were inspired to create "Ridgewood Cares, A Festival of Opportunities," to enlighten others about those and other hard-hitting issues, while at the same time providing a festive atmosphere.
