(UMNS) â The weekend after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, a United Methodist chaplain offered President Bush and his family words of comfort based on Psalm 27:13 - "I believe I shall see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living." The Bible verse struck home with Laura W. Bush. Bush, a lifelong United Methodist, spoke Nov. 12 about the turbulent times she experienced as first lady during the ninth annual Methodist Healthcare Foundation Cancer Center luncheon. (UMNS) â Susanne Ziskis, a member of Ridgewood United Methodist Church, started a spiritual group called Evening Dialogue more than 15 years ago. Annually, the women choose a discipline that they practice over the course of a year. Through the years, they have tackled simplicity, gratitude, forgiveness, solitude and harmony, among other personal goals. This year, the women are focusing on improving opportunities for women in places where human trafficking, AIDS and other problems are rampant, The Ridgewood News reports. [16]Read the full story here» Short-term missions available for youth in 2011 NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) â Next summer United Methodist youth from the United States can participate in weeklong mission work experiences in Nashville that help children, older adults, the homeless and people with special needs. For the second year, the youth mission trips will be sponsored jointly by Young People's Ministries, a division of the United Methodist Board of Discipleship, and YouthWorks!, a multidenominational youth-mission organization. The program will be hosted at McKendree United Methodist Church in downtown Nashville. The mission experience is open to youth who will enter the seventh grade in the fall of 2011 through current high school seniors. Eight weeklong sessions will be available in 2011, beginning the week of June 12 and ending the week of July 31. Cost is $248 per person.
