"The ray of hope is when you refuse to accept that social
boundaries are
Christ's boundaries." - The Rev. Paul Verryn, who has sparked
controversy
                     for taking in Zimbabwean refugees.

Refugees still find shelter at South African church

NEW YORK (UMNS) - For several years, a thousand-plus Zimbabwean
refugees
have found shelter at Central Methodist Mission in Johannesburg,
South
Africa. The Rev. Paul Verryn has sometimes sparked the ire of
South African
authorities for his work with the asylum seekers. But such work is
integral
to the mission of hope and justice, he told members at the Church
of St.
Paul and St. Andrew, United Methodist, in Manhattan.

Inn offers haven for homeless women

SAN FRANCISCO (UMNS) - When Margaret McNulty was homeless in San
Francisco,
she would often walk the streets or ride the buses all night long.
There
were shelters available, but she considered them scary places. She
finally
found the safe place she needed at the Mary Elizabeth Inn, a
United
   Methodist Women national mission institution.

United Methodists provide anti-malaria nets in Sierra Leone

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) - The people of The United Methodist
Church will
provide nearly 400,000 insecticide-treated mosquito nets to
people
throughout the Bo district of southern Sierra Leone beginning
Nov.26. The
United Methodist Church contributed $2 million to the effort as
part of a
larger nationwide net distribution and integrated health campaign.
The
church's Imagine No Malaria team trained more than 3,700 local
health
workers to distribute the nets using the "Nets for Life" model.
The
volunteers will deliver the nets from home to home, working to
instill a
community-wide understanding of the protective value of nets and
the right
way to use and maintain them.

Former head of mission giving program dies at 68

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (UMNS) - The Rev. William T. Carter, 68, who led
the
designated mission-giving program of The United Methodist Church
for 27
years, died Nov. 22 at a Little Rock hospital after a long
illness. Carter,
who retired in 2006, was known throughout the denomination for
his
leadership of the Advance, a fund development unit of the United
Methodist
Board of Global Ministries. "William T. Carter left an
indelible
professional legacy at the board and in the annals of The United
Methodist
Church," said Thomas Kemper, the agency's chief executive.
"Personally, Bill
touched many hearts and souls in his years as pastor and as leader
of the
   Advance."
