"The Upper Sand Mountain is one of the poorest areas in Alabama.
Without the
parish, there are a lot of folks that would go hungry. A lot
wouldn't have
                    housing." - Kenneth Graham, pastor.

Co-op ministry cares for rural poor

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) - Delbert Hancock and his family were
truly proud
when they were able to move into their own home on Upper Sand
Mountain 18
years ago, thanks to the Heart and Hand Housing program, a
ministry of the
[17]Upper Sand Mountain Parish. A cooperative ministry, the parish
encompasses eight area United Methodist churches in a 1,000-mile
area of
Jackson and DeKalb counties in the northeast corner of Alabama.

Louisiana churches help lead fight against AIDS

BATON ROUGE, La. (UMNS) - United Methodists in Louisiana are far
from
content to be honored as leaders in efforts both to educate people
about
AIDS and help lead the way to eliminating the disease in their
state. The
attempt to put faces on the disease and educate about its very
human cost
helped the annual conference there earn one of five inaugural
United
Methodist Global AIDS Leadership Awards recently.

Church members urged to call Congress about DREAM Act

PHOENIX (UMNS) - United Methodist Bishop Minerva Carcaño is
calling upon
United Methodists to join an interfaith effort to support
bipartisan
Congressional legislation on behalf of undocumented immigrant
students.
Church members are encouraged to call the Capitol Hill
switchboard at
202-225-3121 on Dec. 1, talk to their senators and
representatives, and ask
them to vote for and publicly support the [20]DREAM Act.

Offering taken for Global AIDS Fund

NEW YORK, N.Y. (UMNS) - Churches are encouraged to collect special
offerings
for the United Methodist Global AIDS Fund on Dec. 5. The fund
supports
education, prevention, care and treatment programs for people
living with
HIV/AIDS. An estimated 33 million people live with HIV worldwide
and women
account for half of all HIV infections. Twenty-two million people
live with
HIV in Sub-Saharan Africa - 67 percent of all people living
with
HIV. [21]Contributions to the United Methodist Global AIDS Fund
can be made

UMTV: Teens Skype AIDS orphans

WILMINGTON, N.C. (UMTV) - Every 14 seconds, a child is orphaned by
AIDS in
Africa. [22]Zoe Ministry is empowering these children with the
skills they
need to become self-reliant. North Carolina teens raised money for
the
ministry and made friends in Maua, Kenya, via Skype.
