"After looking at this law, keeping it in my prayers and discussing it with
others, I must confess that this law does not maintain our values as a
Christian community, much less as United Methodists." - The Rev. Matt Lacey,
North Alabama (regional) Conference, in his June 12 blog.

160 join Alabama immigration law discussion

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (UMNS) -- More than 160 people gathered at Highlands United
Methodist Church June 28 for the first of four planned North Alabama
(regional) Conference Faithful Conversations about Alabama's new immigration
law. As the Faithful Conversation began, the Rev. Matt Lacey, director of
mission and advocacy for the conference, spoke to a local television news
reporter. "This isn't a political issue for us," he explained. "It's not an
economic issue. It's a religious issue. After the bill was signed into law,
a lot of ministers got together and said there are certain elements of this
law which we felt were going against the gospel."

Church creates its own social network

GULF BREEZE, Fla. (UMNS) -- It's Friday, and the Rev. Jack Kale is doing
what he frequently does on a day off: household chores. But, as all pastors
know, there's no such thing as a day off when you are doing God's work. Rev.
Kale sits down at his kitchen table, opens his laptop, and signs on to
gbNetwork, the private social network of Gulf Breeze United Methodist
Church. In less than five minutes and from the comfort of his home, he's
engaged his congregation. It's a give-and-take that has enormous value.

NCC seeks nominations for interfaith engagement

NEW YORK (UMNS) -- The National Council of Churches Interfaith Relations
Commission plans to recognize congregations that engage with communities of
other faiths. The NCC's Interfaith Engaged Congregational Initiative is
receiving nominations for congregations that "have something important to
share about interfaith engagement." A printable brochure and nomination form
[26]can be downloaded here. The nomination form [27]can also be filled out
   online here.

Ecumenical bodies release principles for missionaries

GENEVA (UMNS) -- A five-page document on the conduct of mission "according
to gospel principles" was released during a public presentation June 28 at
the Ecumenical Centre. The document offers recommendations for respectful
behavior by missionaries, evangelists and other witnesses in sharing the
Christian faith. It follows a five-year series of consultations by the World
Council of Churches, the Pontifical Council for Inter-religious Dialogue of
the Roman Catholic Church and the World Evangelical Alliance.

Church agency, Yonsei University sign partnership

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) -- The Board of Higher Education and Ministry and
Yonsei University School of Theology in Seoul signed a partnership agreement
to collaborate on educational efforts to develop quality leaders, eliminate
poverty and develop dynamic congregations on a global scale. The board and
Yonsei will share their respective areas of expertise, knowledge,
experiences, and resources in fulfilling educational tasks. In addition,
Yonsei University School of Theology will function as the Asian regional
office of the board's Methodist Global Education Fund for Leadership
   Development.
