"God created humanity in his image. ... Every human is of sacred
worth and
loved through the work of Christ on the cross." - The Rev. Omar
Al-Rikabi,
the United Methodist campus minister at the University of Arkansas
at
                Fayetteville, on Christian-Muslim relations.

United Methodists address mosque conflicts

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) - A proposal to build an Islamic center
near ground
zero is one of many controversies that have broken out around the
country over the construction or expansion of mosques. Addressing
the mosque
disputes and other issues in United Methodist-Muslim relations is
going to
take more than a press release of solidarity or conference
resolution,
   interfaith advocates said.

Heifer Project International gets top honor

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (UMNS) - Heifer Project International, long
supported by
United Methodists through The Advance, recently was named the
Direct
Marketing Association Nonprofit Federation's 2110 Nonprofit
Organization of
the Year. The award recognizes outstanding achievement by a
nonprofit
organization using direct response marketing to advance its
mission. Chris
Quinn, the federation's executive director, noted that
Heifer
International's "important work transcends languages and
countries, uniting
   everyone for one important goal."

Since 1944, the organization has provided livestock and
environmentally
sound agricultural training to improve the lives of those who
struggle daily
for reliable sources of food and income. Heifer International is
currently
working in more than 50 countries, including the United States, to
help
families and communities become more self-reliant. [15]Further

U.S. urged to adopt rules to stop prison rape

WASHINGTON (UMNS) - The United Methodist Board of Church and
Society joined
with a coalition of religious, political, human rights and civil
rights
groups to send a letter to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder
urging him to
adopt prison rape elimination standards. The Prison Rape
Elimination Act was
adopted in 2003. Standards to guide corrections officials in
preventing
prison rapes were developed in 2009 and presented to the
Department of
Justice. Holder missed the June 2010 deadline to endorse the
rules. "The
bureaucracy is just dragging its feet, doing a slow walk to the
mound,
because, frankly, prisons don't like anybody looking over their
shoulder.
But that's the only way that we'll stop this, is holding them
accountable,"
said Pat Nolan, executive with Prison Fellowship.
