'Angels' mending lives on Gulf Coast NEW ORLEANS (UMNS) - Since Hurricane Katrina struck five years ago, more than 200,000 volunteers organized through The United Methodist Church have flooded Louisiana and Mississippi and helped thousands of people put their homes and lives back together again. Homeowners such as Leona Cousins, 99, say the volunteers are God-sent. "I never thought I would meet so many nice people this late in my life," she said. And a study committee exploring the global nature of the denomination is listening. After meeting with church leaders throughout the continent, the Committee to Study the Worldwide Nature of The United Methodist Church decided to work toward goals that include defining the covenant that unites the global church, promoting greater regional connections, exploring how the denomination's Book of Discipline can be adapted for local needs and examining the U.S. and international roles of general agencies. (UMNS) - Black Methodists for Church Renewal, a caucus of The United Methodist Church, plans to participate in the NAACP's march in Washington on Oct. 2. At its board meeting Aug. 18-20, the caucus announced its support for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People's "One Nation Movement 10-2-10 Action." The march's purpose is, "To unite America through hope, not hate." Church leaders denounce questioning of Obama's faith WASHINGTON (UMNS) - More than 70 Christian leaders have signed an Aug. 25 letter condemning misrepresentations of President Obama's Christian faith. United Methodist signers included the Rev. Rudy Rasmus, pastor of St. John's Downtown in Houston, and the Rev. Kirbyjon Caldwell, senior pastor at Windsor Village United Methodist Church, also in Houston. "President Obama has been unwavering in confessing Christ as Lord and has spoken often about the importance of his Christian faith," the letter said.
