To celebrate its 145th anniversary and follow the example set
by its founder, James Laidlaw

Maxwell, in ministering to people from another land, Sinlau
Hospital organized a short-term

medical mission to Cochin, in the mountains of southern India.

A team of 15 medical professionals, led by hospital
Superintendent Huang Tsuu-Yuan visited

8 remote villages and examined 1,300 patients and treated them
free of charge.

Besides having clinic hours, the team also made house calls
that included sessions with

physicians and Christian counselors. These visits not only
helped peasants get a medical

check-up, but also provided them with a spiritual and emotional
check-up as well.

Huang shared that he’d observed during this trip that no matter
how poor the people they were

ministering to may be, they’d always dress up before seeing a
doctor. This gesture left a

lasting impression on him because it showed how much these
peasants respected foreign

medical professionals and how trusting and simple they were at
heart.

In related news, Changhua Christian Hospital (CCH) recently
received an invitation to become

a partner hospital of Milton Cato Memorial Hospital in Saint
Vincent and the Grenadines, an

island in the southeastern region of the Caribbean Sea.

Saint Vincent no doubt got wind of CCH’s work and partnership
with St. Jude Hospital in Saint

Lucia a few months ago when the hospital was engulfed in a
fire. A team of doctors had

visited Saint-Lucia once again on September 2, 2010, and were
greeted by the country’s top officials.

This partnership could be viewed as a diplomatic breakthrough
of sorts for Taiwan – a sign

that it has won new trust in its relations with Caribbean
nations. A ceremony celebrating this

partnership between CCH and Milton Cato Memorial was held on
August 31, 2010.

The ceremony culminated with the signing of an agreement
between Saint Vincent’s Deputy

Health Minister Weeks and CCH Superintendent Guo. This historic
moment was also

witnessed by top officials from both countries. After the
ceremony, Guo led a team of 6

medical professionals from CCH on a 3-week medical mission at
Milton Cato to offer free

      treatment to patients.
