âThe needs of our people are extraordinary, but our people are
extraordinary.â â Ray Buckley, interim director of the Center for
Native
                 American Spirituality and Christian Study.

Native Americans share struggles at gathering

BISMARCK, N.D. (UMNS) â The first nine years of Fidel Morenoâs
life were
times of love, acceptance and joy. Then his brother committed
suicide.
Moreno shared his story with United Methodists and members of
other faith
groups at a September gathering in Bismarck, sponsored by the High
Plains
Initiative. Participants shared cultural experiences and discussed
issues
confronting Native Americans â concerns such as substance abuse,
depression,
   diabetes, poverty and suicide.

We must speak while we can on todayâs issues

ASBURY PARK, N.J. (UMNS) â The Rev. Gil Caldwellâs career as a
church pastor
ended with a mini-stroke 10 years ago. But medical issues have not
stopped
this veteran of the 1960s civil rights movement from writing.
People need to
speak out against injustice wherever it exists, Caldwell writes
in a
commentary. âMany of the attitudes and actions directed at the
poor of all
colors and at lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people
reveal
thatâconsciously or unconsciously â some believe certain people do
not fit
their vision of what the United States is, or should be,â he
writes.

Church World Service cheers immigration-reform bill

WASHINGTON (UMNS) â Church World Service, a partner of The United
Methodist
Church, has lauded Senator Robert Menendez (DâNJ) and Senator
Patrick Leahy
(DâVT) for their introduction of the Comprehensive Immigration
Reform Act of
2010. âThis legislation offers concrete policy solutions to fix
our broken
immigration system,â said Erol Kekic, director of the CWS
Immigration and
Refugee Program. âWe urge all senators to cosponsor this bill and
support
its enactment.â The full statement is available [17]here

A lesson with candy: âReverse Trick-or-Treatâ

NEW YORK (UMNS) â This Halloween, your little goblins can treat
your
neighbors to fair-trade chocolate while also offering them a
valuable lesson
in human rights and ending poverty, child labor and environmental
abuses in
the cocoa industry. The United Methodist Committee on Relief,
the
denominationâs Board of Church and Society and Global Exchange, a
fair-trade
organization, invite families to participate in Reverse
Trick-or-Treat by
distributing fair-trade chocolate and United Methodist
informational cards
on fair trade. Kits must be ordered by Oct. 8. More information is
