Native Americans share struggles at gathering BISMARCK, N.D. (UMNS) â The first nine years of Fidel Morenoâs life were times of love, acceptance and joy. Then his brother committed suicide. Moreno shared his story with United Methodists and members of other faith groups at a September gathering in Bismarck, sponsored by the High Plains Initiative. Participants shared cultural experiences and discussed issues confronting Native Americans â concerns such as substance abuse, depression, diabetes, poverty and suicide. Gil Caldwellâs career as a church pastor ended with a mini-stroke 10 years ago. But medical issues have not stopped this veteran of the 1960s civil rights movement from writing. People need to speak out against injustice wherever it exists, Caldwell writes in a commentary. âMany of the attitudes and actions directed at the poor of all colors and at lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people reveal thatâconsciously or unconsciously â some believe certain people do not fit their vision of what the United States is, or should be,â he writes. [16]Read full story and post a comment» Church World Service cheers immigration-reform bill WASHINGTON (UMNS) â Church World Service, a partner of The United Methodist Church, has lauded Senator Robert Menendez (DâNJ) and Senator Patrick Leahy (DâVT) for their introduction of the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2010. âThis legislation offers concrete policy solutions to fix our broken immigration system,â said Erol Kekic, director of the CWS Immigration and Refugee Program. âWe urge all senators to cosponsor this bill and support its enactment.â The full statement is available [17]here A lesson with candy: âReverse Trick-or-Treatâ NEW YORK (UMNS) â This Halloween, your little goblins can treat your neighbors to fair-trade chocolate while also offering them a valuable lesson in human rights and ending poverty, child labor and environmental abuses in the cocoa industry. The United Methodist Committee on Relief, the denominationâs Board of Church and Society and Global Exchange, a fair-trade organization, invite families to participate in Reverse Trick-or-Treat by distributing fair-trade chocolate and United Methodist informational cards on fair trade.
