"Sometimes the best sermons are when you are preaching to yourself."
- The
                            Rev. Brian Rossbert.

Clergy couple blends ministry, marriage

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) - The Rev. Brian Rossbert spent most of
his third
wedding anniversary at a church council meeting, which is typical
of the way
life is working out for him these days. The experience of Rossbert
and his
wife, Laura - a pastoral intern on the other side of the city - is
a common
one for young clergy couples. This is the third installment of a
yearlong
series that is following newly appointed United Methodist clergy
as they
   begin their ministry.

Bishops break new ground at Africa University

OLD MUTARE, Zimbabwe (UMNS) - Breaking ground on a $60,000 duplex
for staff
members is a concrete signal of The United Methodist Church's
commitment to
Africa University, said the school's founding chancellor. The
groundbreaking
marks the beginning of the first structure funded by The United
Methodist
Church's African bishops at the 18-year-old campus.

First woman district superintendent in Puerto Rico dies

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (UMNS) - The Rev. Myriam Visot Fernández,
the first
woman named superintendent in the Methodist Church of Puerto Rico,
died Oct.
   8. She was 80.
Visot Fernández was born in Ponce, on Dec. 29, 1929. She
earned a
bachelor's degree in organic chemistry in 1950, graduating with
honors from
the University of Puerto Rico. In 1953, she earned a certified
diploma from
the International Center of Economics and Finance in Santiago,
Chile.
She began her career at the University of Puerto Rico, where she
taught
mathematics, chemistry and physical science. In 1971, she became
associate
pastor at Iglesia Metodista Universitaria, and received diaconal
orders. In
1980, she was ordained elder, and in 1985, she was named
district
superintendent of the Methodist Church in Puerto Rico. In 1991,
she returned
to be a pastor of the RÃo Piedras Heights Methodist Church, where

the
Church in Puerto Rico, an honorary title.
A wake took place Oct. 9 at Iglesia Metodista Universitaria in RÃo
Piedras,
where Visot was the pastor from 1971 to 1975. A special service
was held the
next day, and her body was buried in Borinquen Memorial Cemetery
in Caguas.

Chilean miner: 'God has never left us'

COPIAPO, Chile (UMNS) - Their Christian faith has helped many of
the 33
miners trapped for more than two months in a copper-gold mine.
"There are
actually 34 of us," wrote Jimmy Sanchez, 19, the youngest of the
miners, in
a letter sent up from the mine on Tuesday, "because God has never
left us
down here." A CNN story noted that on Aug. 31, miner Mario
Sepulveda had
reported: "We 33 miners are walking hand in hand with God."
In a
Christianity Today blog, Trevor Persaud notes that miners have
also made
decisions about their family lives and at least two have made
professions of
faith. [18]The full blog post is available here.
