âHe just believed every human being is entitled to be treated as a
person
precious in the sight of God.â â Retired Bishop Melvin Talbert on
his
friend, the late Bishop Edsel A. Ammons.

UM college president honored in Ebony

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (UMNS) â Last year, Walter M. Kimbrough searched
Ebony
magazineâs Power 100 for potential speakers to invite to lecture
series at
Philander Smith College, a historically black, United
Methodist-affiliated
institution. This year, the collegeâs 43-year-old president was on
the list
   himself.

Deacon called from one life to another

MACON, Ga. (UMNS) â Godâs plan for Stacey Harwell came as a
surprise to her.
Harwellâs call into ministry didnât lead to a pulpit but rather
to a
ministry that has âone foot in the world and one foot in the
church.â

Brian Combs â Love for modern-day lepers

ASHVILLE, (UMNS) â The Rev. Brian Combs ignores labels and simply
calls
everyone a child of God. Combs is a United Methodist minister at a
urban
church in Asheville, N.C., that bridges the gap between privilege
and
poverty. Everyone is welcome at the Haywood Street Congregation â
âwhite
collar, blue collar, bloody collar ⦠just anybody,â he says.

BBC features Haiti survivor Jim Gulley

LONDON (UMNS) â Though his contributions may only be a âdrop in
the
bucket,â the Rev. Jim Gulley told BBC Radio 4 that he is
determined to
follow Godâs calling to help those in need in Haiti. The United
Methodist
agricultural specialist reflected on what happened a year ago
during the
Haiti earthquake, when he and the Revs. Sam Dixon and Clint Rabb
were
trapped in the collapse of the Hotel Montana in Port-au-Prince.
Both Dixon
and Rabb died as a result of that collapse. Gulleyâs reflections
can be
found near the 13-minute mark. The audio clip is available for
four more
   days.

Faith leaders condemn Egypt bombing

NEW YORK (UMNS) â Christian, Jewish and Muslim leaders have
condemned the
New Year's Eve bombing that killed 21 worshippers and wounded many
others at
All Saints Church in Alexandria, Egypt.
âThe perpetrators of this outrage are apparently so blinded by
hatred that
they have lost touch with the tenets of any known faith,â said the
Rev.
Michael Kinnamon, top executive of the U.S. National Council of
Churches.
âIt is simply agonizing to think that many around the world will
mistake
this horror as the attack of one religious community on another.
Christians,
Jews and Muslims around the world are united by their outrage
and
   condemnation of this soul-less act.â
