"We need to reclaim our identity as abolitionists, and, if this is a helpful
tool in doing that, I'm eager to do it." â Carl Thomas Gladstone, a United
                              Methodist deacon

Bishopâs letter to King finds surge in racism

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) â Each year, United Methodist Bishop Woodie W.
White
writes a "birthday letter" to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. about the
progress of racial equality in the United States. Although "gigantic
gains"
have been made in race relations, he writes this year, "there is a
persistent core racism in American life that refuses to go away."

Church celebrations, service honor King

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) â To commemorate what would have been Martin
Luther
King Jr.'s 82nd birthday, United Methodist congregations across the
connection were "taking a day on, not a day off" on Jan. 17 to reach out
to
their neighbors in activities that ranged from washing the feet of
underprivileged children and giving them new pairs of shoes to writing
words
of encouragement to U.S. military personnel.

Deacon plans Abolitionist Hymnal

FLINT, Mich. (UMNS) â Slavery might seem like a term from a bygone era,
but
more than 27 million people worldwide are victims of modern-day human
trafficking. The Rev. Carl Thomas Gladstone, a United Methodist deacon
and
director of the Young Leaders Initiative in the Detroit Annual (regional)
Conference, hopes to inspire churches to take action against slavery by
adapting songs from the 19th-century freedom movement for a new CD,
   [17]Abolitionist Hymnal.

Event addresses African-American women and HIV/AIDS

NEW YORK (UMNS) â Recognizing that HIV/AIDS is the leading cause of death
among African-American women ages 25-34, the United Methodist Church
Global
AIDS Fund Committee is sponsoring a conference on that topic March 3 - 5
in
Columbia, S.C. The purpose of the event is to mobilize faith communities
into action and focus on HIV/AIDS-related issues that specifically affect
   African-American women. [19]Read more here.
