"I am amazed at how often my work refreshes my personal faith, which to me
is a good indicator that God has me where I am called." -- The Rev. Mara
                                   Bailey

Church leaders support immigrants at border

NOGALES, MEXICO (UMNS) â In a region plagued by drug violence and
kidnappings, nearly 40 United Methodists from Arizona, including Bishop
Minerva Carcaño, gathered on a cold January morning at the Mexico
border to
distribute blankets and health kits and offer a witness to the struggles
of
   expelled immigrants.

New pastors reach halfway point of first year

NASHVILLE (UMNS) â Six months into their first appointments, new United
Methodist clergy have had time to get to know their congregations and
begin
learning what it means to be a pastor. They share their thoughts and
feelings In the sixth installment of a yearlong series following new
clergy
   as they begin their ministry,

Donât repeal health act, social action agency says

WASHINGTON (UMNS) â The United Methodist Board of Church and Society is
speaking out against efforts in the 112th Congress to repeal the âPatient
Protection & Affordable Care Act of 2010.â The board cites the
denominationâs belief that health care is âa basic human rightâ and the
position stated in the Social Principles that âit is a governmental
responsibility to provide all citizens with health care.â

Jim Winkler, the boardâs chief executive, also writes this week in
the [18]agencyâs e-newsletter, âFaith in Action,â that it is in the
interest
of society to ensure people continue to contribute to the common good.
The
U.S. House of Representatives voted Jan. 19 to repeal the new law, but
that
move faces opposition from the Senate and President Barack Obama.

UMCOR assists flood-affected families
in Sri Lanka

NEW YORK (UMNS) -- Nearly a million people have been affected by severe
flooding in Sri Lanka since monsoon rains began to pelt the island
nation on
Dec. 26. The United Methodist Committee on Relief has had a program
office
in Batticaloa, the hardest-hit area, since 2004 and currently is running
a
livelihoods program in 16 villages of the district. All of the villages
have
been flooded and some 2,500 families displaced.

Bread for World starts 2011 âlettersâ campaign

WASHINGTON (UMNS) â Bread for the World has launched its 2011 Offering of
Letters campaign to urge Congress to reform U.S. foreign assistance so
it is
more effective and benefits hungry and poor people globally. More
effective
aid to countries such as Haiti and Liberia could help them recover from
poverty made worse, respectively, by the 2010 earthquake and two
devastating
   civil wars.
