Church leaders applaud Cuba travel changes

   NEW YORK (UMNS) â When a group of religious leaders, including United
   Methodist Bishop Sharon Zimmerman Rader, met with President Barack Obama
   last November, they shared their frustrations over government-imposed 
travel
   restrictions that hindered their support of partner churches in Cuba. Now
   the Obama administration is easing some of those restrictions.

Retired Bishop Marion Edwards dead at 71

   COLUMBUS, Ga. (UMNS) â Retired United Methodist Bishop Marion Edwards, 
71,
   who  served  as  episcopal leader of the denominationâs North Carolina
   Conference  from  1996-2004, died Jan. 24 at Columbus Hospice House in
   Columbus, Ga., after a battle with cancer. Funeral services are set for
   Saturday.




Higher Ed board names Yocom as executive

   NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) â The United Methodist Board of Higher Education 
and
   Ministryâs Division of Ordained Ministry has named the Rev. Rena Yocom as
   its executive for clergy formation and theological education.

   Yocom, who currently serves as missiologist-in-residence and director of 
the
   course  of study at Saint Paul School of Theology in Kansas City, Mo.,
   accepted the position and will begin work on March 7. She has previously
   worked  with  the  United Methodist Board of Global Ministries and the
   Louisiana Annual (regional) Conference and was a vice president of the
   Higher Education and Ministry board of directors during the late â70s.


Former Ordained Ministry staff member dies

   NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) â A former staff member of the United Methodist
   Board of Higher Education and Ministry, the Rev. Donald Treese, 80, died
   Jan. 21 in Carlisle, Pa. Survivors include his wife, Lois. He served as 
an
   executive with the boardâs Division of Ordained Ministry from 1979-93.
   Funeral arrangements are pending.


Faith leaders gather for cleansing, healing

   TUCSON, Ariz. (UMNS) â Leaders of faith communities in Arizona gathered 
Jan.
   24 at La Toscana Centerâthe site of the Jan. 8 shootingsâfor a service of
   cleansing and healing. Among the faith community leaders participating 
were
   United Methodist Bishop Minerva G. Carcaño, episcopal leader of the 
Desert
   Southwest Annual (regional) Conference, and the Rev. Cynthia Langston 
Kirk,
   also a United Methodist. Other faith groups represented included 
Christian
   Church  (Disciples  of Christ), Episcopal, Jewish, Presbyterian, Roman
   Catholic and United Church of Christ. The event was not open to the 
public,
   but clergy from any faith in Tucson were invited to attend.
