Rudy Rasmus. Council of Bishops calls for dialogue NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) â Bishop Larry M. Goodpaster, president of the United Methodist Council of Bishops, released a statement Feb. 3 calling for âthoughtful, prayerful dialogue about sensitive and challenging issues.â His statement follows the Jan. 31 release of a document signed by 33 retired United Methodist bishops that calls for the church to remove its ban on homosexual clergy. The Council of Bishops remains committed to living within the covenant defined by the Book of Discipline, the denominationâs law book, and it understands âthat it is the General Conference that re-examines that covenant every four years and has the responsibility to define our covenant for the next four years.â He asks church members to pray and fast for the whole church with the approach of General Conference in Tampa, Fla., in 2012. In the United States, the number increases in areas hosting major sporting events, and groups are bringing attention to that fact as the Super Bowl approaches at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Feb. 6. More information is available at [21]UMCOR's Anti-Trafficking project and visit [22]United Methodist Women's Intercept Trafficking web pages. People can donate to The United Methodist Church's Anti-Human-Trafficking efforts at [23]UMCOR Advance #333615. Pastor speaks at U.N. gathering on mercury CHIBA, Japan (UMNS) - The Rev. Lisa Sykes, a United Methodist elder in Virginia, addressed an international gathering aimed at developing a legally binding instrument to reduce people's exposure to mercury, a known hazardous substance. The United Nations Environment Programme sponsored the second session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee, which met Jan. 24-28. Sykes is president of the Coalition for Mercury-free Drugs and wrote The United Methodist Church's resolution on "Protecting Children from Mercury-containing Drugs." [24]More information is available here. Advisory: Series will focus on rural church More than six in 10 United Methodist congregations, an estimated 20,000 churches, serve rural areas in the United States. Yet the rural church, which took Methodism into nearly every county in the United States, often is neglected and misunderstood, according to a churchwide survey. The multi-part series, "Harvest of Hope: The Rural Church in America," takes an in-depth look at the challenges faced by rural congregations, and the issues before the larger church as this critical foundation of the denomination seeks to move from survival to revival.
