âIt is true we could not, many of us, conjugate a verb or parse a sentence,
and murdered the Kingâs English almost every lick. But there was a Divine
unction attended in the word preached and thousands fell under the mighty
power of God.â â Francis Asbury, writing in 1803 about the early circuit
                                  riders.

Court takes up membership, marriage

DURHAM, N.C. (UMNS) â The United Methodist Judicial Council again is

asked to reconsider a 2005 decision allowing a pastor to bar a gay man
from
joining his congregation. During its April 27-30 meeting, the council
also
will take up a request from the New York Annual (regional) Conference,
deferred from the October meeting, for a ruling on the validity of a
policy
related to clergy and same-sex marriage.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) â United Methodist college students are among the
hundreds of U.S. citizens joining in the mass departure from Egypt a week
and a half after protesters took to the streets to demand a new leader

Advisory: Series will focus on rural church

Want to know more about the importance of the rural church? The United
Methodist News Service will take an in-depth look at the challenges faced by
rural congregations and the issues before the larger church as rural
congregations seek to move "from survival to revival.â The multimedia
package of stories, videos and photos, âHarvest of Hope: The Rural Church in
              America,â will run Feb. 7-11 on [22]www.umc.org.

Souper Bowl of Caring tackles hunger

ARLINGTON, Texas (UMNS) â Souper Bowl of Caring is a national movement to
use the weeks around the Super Bowl to collect money or food for the hungry.
Collections can be donated to the charity of a congregationâs choice. The
movement began at Spring Valley Presbyterian Church in Columbia, S.C., and
has since been taken up by churches, schools and community groups across the
United States. Last year, more than 260,000 young people collected $10
million in dollars and food for hunger-relief charities as part of Souper
                              Bowl of Caring.

Global Fund takes steps to prevent fraud

GENEVA (UMNS) â The Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria on
Feb. 4 announced extra measures to reinforce financial safeguards after its
inspector general discovered the misuse of grant money in four countries.
Those measures include expanding the mandate of those who monitor
expenditures, doubling the budget of the fundâs inspector general and
increasing the staff responsible for financial management.
The organization also is setting up a panel of international experts to
review its systems and ensure that its approaches to fraud prevention are
among the strongest in the world. The Global Fund serves a total of 145
                                 countries.
The United Methodist Churchâs Imagine No Malaria campaign contributed
$590,000 to The Global Fund in December. But the money had not yet been
released when the fraud was detected and was held as The Global Fund carried
out its review. Imagine No Malaria is an initiative of the people of The
United Methodist Church to raise funds to help eliminate malaria deaths in
                              Africa by 2015.
