"Don't confuse 'nonprofit' with 'non-prophet.' Let justice roll down like
water, and not bottled water."- The Rev. Carlyle Fielding Stewart,
speaking
at a convocation for black clergy.

Black clergy address unique concerns

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) - The Bible story of Elijah leaving his cave (1
Kings 19:1-18) provided the theme for a recent national gathering of
African-American United Methodist clergy in Nashville, Tenn. Some 320
clergy
devoted four days to confronting and confessing their personal and
professional "cave" experiences at the event sponsored by the United
   Methodist Board of Discipleship.

United Methodist film wins Emmy

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) - A short film funded by a United Methodist
Board of
Discipleship grant won a regional Emmy. The Rev. Steve Horswill-Johnston,
the producer-director, received the award for "Digital Diary: Christine"
Jan. 29. The Nashville/Midsouth Chapter of The National Academy of
Television Arts & Sciences gave the honor.

Horswill-Johnston, the board's executive director of communications and
brand strategy, described the 12-minute story of a woman trying
desperately
to save her marriage as a "bring-brain" film. It invites "people to
think,
to explore and to discuss ... to unwrap Jesus' teachings and see their
application in our own lives in a whole new way," he said.

The "Digital Diary: Christine" DVD and a 32-page discussion guide may be
purchased through [17]Cokesbury or ordered online at
[18]www.Godfilms.com.

Seminary reduces tuition for military chaplains' degree

WASHINGTON (UMNS) - Wesley Theological Seminary is offering its new
doctor
of ministry degree program for military chaplains at half the usual
tuition
rate. Classes for the new "Military Chaplaincy: Religious Leadership in a
Complex, Multi-faith Environment" degree will begin in early May with an
application deadline of March 18. The program is designed to enhance the
ability of chaplains to satisfy both the operational needs of military
leaders and the religious needs of soldiers and their families. Questions
can be directed to Lew Parks at 202-885-6481 or by e-mail at
[19]lparks@wesleyseminary.edu. Program details are also available by
contacting the admissions office at [20]admissions@wesleyseminary.edu.

Civil rights leader publishes book on racial equality

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) - The Rev. Joseph Lowery, a United Methodist who
has
committed his life to the fight for racial equality, has written his
first
book at age 89. The recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom
endured
cruel mistreatment as an activist in the struggle for civil rights in the
United States. Lowery writes that he could not have made it through
without
   his moral and religious roots.

Lowery said he wrote "Singing the Lord's Song in a Strange Land"
(Abingdon
Press, February 2011) because people must remain vigilant to preserve
hard-won freedoms. "We must continue to witness for justice through our
institutions and as individuals," he said. "We must continue to sing the
Lord's song when justice is denied." He will return to the pulpit of
Cascade
United Methodist Church, Atlanta, Feb. 13 to deliver a sermon and host a
   book signing.
