"People in small towns have lost so much ... and yet they hang on to that
faith." â The Rev. Kathy Hammond, North Dakota pastor

Saving Bowbells: Churches keep hope alive

BOWBELLS, N.D. (UMNS) â Main Street, along with the churches built around
it, is dying in towns like Bowbells and thousands of similar rural
communities across the United States. The United Methodist Church still
has
an estimated 20,000 rural churches today - representing more than six in
10
of the denomination's congregations - and faces the challenge of how it
will
continue to minister to some of its most faithful members, as documented
in
the UMNS series, "Harvest of Hope: The Rural Church in America."

Rural Riches: Scenes from a Dakota Parish

KENMARE, N.D. (UMTV) â Pastor Kathy Hammond and her congregants in three
North Dakota towns share dreams and concerns for the future of The United
Methodist Church. âA lot of hope would be gone, if the local church was
   gone,â Hammond says.

Blog: The rural backbone of American Methodism

NEW YORK (UMNS) â In her Bloombytes blog, Linda Bloom writes about how
small
rural churches still remain part of the backbone of the denomination,
despite their dwindling numbers, and what is needed to sustain them.
