âThe students can tell their stories better than anyone else can. I can tell
you the story, but to really hear how theyâve been nurtured at these schools
and how the faculty take an interest in them, it has to come from them.â --
Cynthia Bond Hopson, a Black College Fund executive at the United Methodist
Board of Higher Education and Ministry.

McCord interns want to give back to church

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) â Each year, students from the 11 historically black
colleges and universities related to The United Methodist Church are
selected upon recommendation of their college presidents to serve as
goodwill ambassadors for the Black College Fund, which supports those
schools. For the students, it can be a transforming experience.

DALLAS (UMNS) â When United Methodists start electing clergy delegates this
spring to the denominationâs top legislative meeting, several new groups

Bishops react to homosexuality statement

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) â A call by 36 retired bishops to end The United
Methodist Churchâs ban on homosexual clergy has prompted varied reactions
from church leaders. In the past two weeks, some bishops have urged prayer
and thoughtful discussion. Others have expressed disappointment in the
retired leaders. Still others have voiced support for the change. Bishops
also stressed their commitment to uphold church law.

Garth Brooks concert helps United Methodists help others

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) â One thing was obvious when Garth Brooks took the
stage to help Tennessee flood victims rebuild their lives: His heart was
definitely in it. Brooks and Trisha Yearwood joined forces last December
with a nine-concert series of record-breaking performances to raise $5
million for Nashville flood relief. The Community Foundation of Middle
Tennessee announced that initial grant allocations of $1.37 million were
divided among a variety of nonprofit agencies, including the United
Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) â Tennessee Annual (regional)
Conference. The Tennessee Conference has received $200,000 to continue its
work to provide help to flood victims with needs that otherwise might not be
   met.

Advocates to rally in support of economic justice for women and families

WASHINGTON (UMNS) â More than 700 people of faith are expected to visit
Capitol Hill March 25-28 to advocate for development, security and economic
justice, especially for women and girls, at the ninth-annual Ecumenical
Advocacy Days. Policymakers, expert speakers and representatives from global
regions will join church leaders and grassroots activists in reflecting on
the 2011 Ecumenical Advocacy Days conference theme, "Development, Security
and Economic Justice: What's Gender Got to Do with It?"
"Gender's got a lot to do with it,â said event coordinator Douglas G. Grace.
âAround the world, women and girls comprise 70 percent of those living in
poverty". He added, âNot specifically a gathering on âgender issues,â this
yearâs conference is for men and women of faith who want to be a force for
change for the betterment of all.â The United Methodist Churchâs Board of
Church and Society is a sponsor.
