âTraditional worship is fine, but if we have a good healthy blend of
traditional and contemporary, that would definitely draw ⦠a younger
generation to keep the church going and have some sense of commitment to
wanting to belong in the church.â â The Rev. William Brewer, East Ohio
                                Conference.

Young pastor juggles many responsibilities

NASHVILLE (UMNS) â At an age when many people are trying to âfind
themselves,â one young man has found himself leading two churches. At 25,
the Rev. William Brewer is the youngest full-time clergy member in the East
Ohio Annual (regional) Conference of The United Methodist Church. An
additional challenge is that one of Brewerâs churches, Maple Heights, is a
cross-racial appointment to a mostly white congregation. Brewer is African
   American.

A friend in mission is a friend indeed

NEW YORK (UMNS) â In a commentary, Harriett Jane Olson says mission work
requires people to not just be willing to make a contribution but also be
willing to offer companionship. âIt is so tempting to take what we âknowâ
and apply it to what we think another person needs,â writes the top
executive of the Womenâs Division, United Methodist Board of Global
   Ministries.

March 4 World Day of Prayer highlights women of Chile

NEW YORK (UMNS) â The World Day of Prayer, an ecumenical event led by
Christian women around the world for more than a century, will highlight the
women of Chile on March 4. The 2011 theme of the annual event is "How Many
Loaves Have You?" based on the biblical story of Jesusâ feeding of 5,000
persons in Mark 6:30-44. Prayers on March 4 will follow the lead of Chilean
women âto enter a process that draws us into the Bible, into the context of
Chile and into the real situations of our lives and communities,â planners
   say.

World Council of Churches ponders assembly theme

GENEVA, Switzerland (UMNS) â The Rev.Walter Altmann, moderator of the World
Council of Churchesâ Central Committee, argued forcefully Feb. 16 that unity
as well as justice and peace should be included in the theme for the next
assembly of the worldâs largest ecumenical body. The planning committee for
the October 2013 assembly in Busan, South Korea, is proposing a choice of
two suggested themes â âGod of life, lead us to justice and peace,â or âIn
Godâs world, called to be one.â

âThe proposed themes should not be seen as basically alternatives,â the
Brazilian Lutheran said in his opening address to the 150-member Central
Committee, which is meeting Feb. 16 -22 and includes United Methodist
representatives. âEach of these two perspectives is part of the one overall
understanding of the ecumenical calling and commitment that unites our
   fellowship.â

Institute for small churches planned

FAYETTEVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) â A Small Church Leadership Institute will be
held March 20-24 at Mount Sequoyah in Fayetteville. Speakers include the
Rev. Tex Sample, former academic dean at Saint Paul School of Theology in
Kansas City, Mo., and retired Bishop Bruce Blake. The purpose of this event
is to equip laity and pastors with the skills they need for leading their
small attendance churches. A limited number of scholarships are available.
