âMost of us, in moments of candid introspection, acknowledge we have
committed sins of omission (silence) when we should have spoken and acted. I
have admitted times I should have challenged segregation, but I quenched the
spirit by remaining silent.â â The Rev. Gilbert H. Caldwell.

Exploring black history transcends race

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (UMNS) â People can only benefit from a deeper study of
black history in the United States, argues the Rev. Gilbert H. Caldwell. If
Americans do not learn their nationâs past failings, he says, they canât
appreciate the progress the country has made.

Church responds to Côte dâIvoire crisis

ABIDJAN, Côte dâIvoire (UMNS) â The leader of The United Methodist Church
here has called for people on both sides of the countryâs post-election
crisis to engage in dialogue. Bishop Benjamin Boniâs invitation came as the
West African country struggled in a standoff between two parties over who
won the presidency in the Nov. 28 run-off election.

Church caucuses react to homosexuality statement

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) â United Methodists with differing views have
weighed in on a [17]statement from 36 retired bishops calling on the
denomination to lift its ban on homosexual clergy.

The Renewal and Reform Coalition, representing six unofficial evangelical
renewal caucuses in the denomination, issued a [18]statement on Feb. 17 that
called the bishopsâ document âwoefully inadequate.â

The retired bishops did not address âthe clear pronouncements of Scripture
in both the Old and New Testaments and almost 2,000 years of Christian
history,â the coalition said. âThe teaching of The United Methodist Church
on human sexuality is consistent with the teaching of the church
   universal.â

Reconciling Ministries Network, an unofficial caucus that advocates for
greater inclusion of homosexual members, also responded to the retired
bishopsâ statement. Troy Plummer, the groupâs executive director, said the
bishops âbreathe Gospel life into putting in policy what we know to be
   true.â

âGay clergy are called, gifted, prepared, qualified and are ready to
continue or to begin serving our church openly,â Plummer said in an e-mail
   to UMNS.

The Book of Discipline, the United Methodist law book, states that
homosexuality âis incompatible with Christian teaching.â Only General
Conference, the denominationâs top lawmaking body, can change the Book of
   Discipline.
