âThe spirit moved from Philly to Peking, from Montgomery to Manila, from
Boston to Berlin ⦠and just the other day it moved to Cairo.â â The Rev.
                               Joseph Lowery

Many U.S. presidents have Methodist ties

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) --They escorted Abraham Lincolnâs body to his burial
in Illinois. They served lemonade to guests at the White House in an age of
temperance. They had roles in inaugurations and extended spiritual advice to
presidents on justice issues, ranging from slavery to war. United Methodists
have a long history of ties to U.S. presidencies.

Civil rights icon Lowery launches book

ALANTA (UMNS) -- The spirit of the civil rights movement in America is still
strong enough to influence the downfall of a tyrant in Egypt in just 18
days, said one of the movementâs most enduring voices. Americaâs foreign
policy has mellowed because of that abiding spirit, the Rev. Joseph Lowery
noted as he preached at Cascade United Methodist Church on Feb. 13. The
89-year-old civil rights icon also officially launched his first book,
âSinging the Lordâs Song in a Strange Land,â at Cascade, where he served as
   pastor from 1986-92.

African leaders urge more help for Sudan

GENEVA (UMNS) â At a packed Feb. 18 hearing during the World Council of
Churches' Central Committee meeting, African religious leaders thanked
ecumenical groups for assisting in "the miracle" of southern Sudanese
independence, but called on continuing help after the Republic of South
Sudan becomes official on July 9.
The Rev. Samuel Kobia, a Kenyan Methodist and former WCC chief executive who
served as a special ecumenical envoy to Sudan, said issues to be resolved in
the split from the north include an oil revenue-sharing agreement, water
   management and disposition of indebtedness.

Religious leaders speak out in Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. (UMNS) â United Methodists and others in Wisconsinâs
ecumenical community are urging Gov. Scott Walker to reconsider a proposal
to eliminate most collective bargaining rights for public employees as part
   of the stateâs budget cuts.

Wisconsin Area United Methodist Bishop Linda Lee, Milwaukee Archbishop
Jerome Listecki and Madison Rabbi Jonathan Biatch are among the religious
leaders who have spoken out on the proposal, which has drawn protesters to
Madison for the past week. United Methodist pastors also were among the more
than 50 interfaith leaders signing a statement affirming the right for
workers âto form associations to improve their conditions at work.â

Church leaders discuss Iraq situation

GENEVA (UMNS) -- Several key Iraqi Christian leaders, including a patriarch
and four archbishops, spoke in Geneva last week about the ongoing situation
   in Iraq.

In a public hearing held during the World Council of Churches' Central
Committee meetings, the Iraqi leaders emphasized the importance of âcreating
an atmosphere of security for all citizensâ in Iraq. The group encouraged
the international church leaders to advocate with their own governments to
âwork to empower the role of the state to secure rights for all no matter
their religious and ethnic background and according to the constitution.â
