"It's a wonderful way to acquaint people with our schools. And it helps the
students understand that 'Hey, there's somebody out there pulling for me and
praying for me and that means I need to do my best work.' It's win-win for
everyone." - Cynthia Bond Hopson, a Black College Fund executive.

Preachers' kids find support at retreat

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (UMNS) - Preachers' kids or "PKs" are well aware of the
challenges living in the public eye. The Rev. Mary John Dye, a district
superintendent and a PK herself, has a passion for PKs, particularly as they
battle the trials and tribulations of their teenage years. For the past two
years, with the support of Bishop Larry Goodpaster and the other district
superintendents of the United Methodist Western North Carolina Annual
(regional) Conference, Dye has pulled together a team of adult PKs to lead a
winter retreat just for preachers' kids.

College athletes connect with churches

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (UMNS) - During a recent Saturday basketball game, a team
from United Methodist-affiliated Philander Smith College in Little Rock,
Ark., was greeted not just as basketball players but also as "Athletic
Ambassadors." They are part of [19]Project Athletic Ambassador, sponsored by
the denomination's Black College Fund, which pairs local churches with teams
from the 11 United Methodist-related historically black colleges and
   universities during away games.

Interfaith prayer vigil set March 8 in Pennsylvania

HARRISBURG, Pa. (UMNS) - United Methodist Advocacy in Pennsylvania is
calling for church members to join a March 8 interfaith prayer vigil over
the state budget proposal from 5:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on the steps in front
of the state Capitol in Harrisburg.

Gov. Tom Corbett will be unveiling his 2011-12 state budget proposal that
day to a joint session of the Pennsylvania General Assembly. With
Pennsylvania facing a $4 billion shortfall, the budget is certain to contain
broad cuts in state services. "Gov. Corbett and legislators will be making
hundreds of moral choices in the coming weeks and months," said Stephen
Drachler, the organization's executive director. "Those moral decisions add
up to a budget that is a moral document."

Anonymous donor gives $100,000 to seminary fund

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) - A United Methodist chaplain and his wife have
donated $100,000 to the Special Seminary Scholarship Fund to help those
seeking ordination in The United Methodist Church. The United Methodist
Office of Loans and Scholarships, Board of Higher Education and Ministry,
will administer the fund. Income from the donation will generate two
   additional $2,000 scholarships each year.

"I was able to graduate from seminary with no debt because of scholarships,
and my wife and I wanted to help others do that," he said. They asked that
   the donation remain anonymous.

The Special Seminary Scholarship Fund, created in 2006 with a $2.25 million
transfer from earnings on investments of loan funds, is used for seminary
students 30 and under who are planning to be ordained as clergy in The
United Methodist Church. An additional $1 million was added to the fund in
2007 from earnings on investments, bringing the balance to $3.25 million.
Between 65 and 70 scholarships of $2,000 are awarded each year from the
   fund.
