International women's day: Sharing experiences on Media Literacy and Gender

WACC calls its networks, members and partners to participate in UNESCO's Women Make the News campaign during International Women's Day 2011

In commemoration of the International Women's Day, March 8, the World Association for Christian Communication (WACC) is calling on its networks, members and partners from civil society groups, associations of media practitioners and media organisations to participate in UNESCO's Women make the news campaign.

The theme of the campaign, "Media and Information Literacy and Gender", calls attention to the 'importance of fostering media and information literate societies as a way to improve the understanding of women and men about gender perspectives in media and information systems'.

"The concept of women's communication rights includes the right to fair and balanced representation in and through the media, says WACC in an appeal issued from its Toronto office, March 4 . "Critical media literacy from a gender perspective, the ability to analyze media content with a gender lens, is a tool through which audiences can contribute towards this end". WACC is therefore urging the networks to help inform UNESCO's decision to support media and information literacy initiatives by sharing experiences, good practices and recommendations on the campaign website: www.unesco.org/webworld/en/wmn2011 and a copy to: gmmp@waccglobal.org.
