“We wanted to have something that women could take home or people could pick
up who weren’t there.” — the Rev. Ann Tiemeyer, Ecumenical Women

Women offers tools to combat strife

NEW YORK (UMNS) — The violence currently raging in Libya and Côte d’Ivoire
is particularly threatening to the most vulnerable citizens of those nations
   – women, children and the elderly. Ecumenical Women at the United Nations --
an international coalition of church denominations and ecumenical
organizations, including The United Methodist Church – has developed tools
to encourage women and others to act as peace-builders as a way to respond
   to these crises.

March 10 ‘10-Fold’ online event focuses on sustainable agriculture

NEW YORK (UMNS) -- The 10-Fold online event for March will focus on The
United Methodist Church’s efforts in working directly with farmers to put an
   end to hunger and malnutrition.

Throughout the day on March 10 at [17]10Fold.org/live, Judith Santiago will
share stories of farmers who are becoming agents of transformation by
learning new ways of working with the land, new crops to grow, and
techniques to pass along their knowledge to other farmers. Viewers will have
an opportunity to ask questions during the live update at noon Eastern Time.
Participants also can automatically raise $1 to support the project with a
   simple click of the mouse.

Student organization begins water-justice campaign

GENEVA, Switzerland (UMNS)--The World Student Christian Federation is
launching a global campaign on water justice on March 22, which is World
Water Day and the Universal Day of Prayer for Students. The federation has
challenged student Christian movements worldwide to join the campaign.

“As Christians, we know that water is a powerful symbol of our thirst for
justice, of the power of the Holy Spirit, and of the wellspring of life in
Jesus Christ. As student activists, we see that, due to human action, water
scarcity, water pollution and water commercialization and privatization are
serious threats to our fellow people of Earth—the poor, the oppressed, and
the marginalized—with whom we are called to walk in solidarity.”

The two-year campaign will intertwine with the 2011 and 2012 advocacy themes
for the World Student Christian Federation of Overcoming Violence and
Economic Justice. Apply as a volunteer to the [18]water justice taskforce.

What is the significance of ashes being placed on the forehead on Ash
Wednesday?

The use of ashes as a sign of mortality and repentance has a long history in
Jewish and Christian worship, and it’s often part of United Methodist Ash
   Wednesday services.
