“It’s a mission to reach kids who wouldn’t otherwise have a church
experience, and that has happened. If they use the center, they have 15 to
30 minutes of hearing the gospel every time they go.” — United Methodist
   Bill Porter, discussing SkateChurch.

New mission can rejuvenate churches

DAVENPORT, Iowa (UMNS) — A skateboard ministry at St. John’s United
Methodist Church turned out to be the answer to youth’s prayers. As members
of St. John’s and other congregations have discovered, mission outside the
church walls can often help a church reach new people. This is the fourth
story in a series on churches in transition.

Economist calls for justice in work force

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) — If people truly lived out faith’s calling to love
their neighbor, the U.S. economy would look much different, said Julianne
Malveaux. The MIT-educated economist is the 15th president of United
Methodist-affiliated [18]Bennett College for Women in Greensboro, N.C. She
spoke about “The Future of Work: A Perspective on Economic Justice” at
Scarritt-Bennett, a conference and retreat center owned by the Women’s
Division of the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries.

Blog: Rob Bell and Hell

In his blog “Faith Media + Culture,” the Rev. Larry Hollon ponders whether
hell is a state of being. The fuss over the new book by evangelical
megachurch pastor Rob Bell raises questions for Hollon, the top executive of
United Methodist Communications, about how we view good and evil.

United Methodists prepare for Red River floods

Fargo, N.D. (UMNS) — United Methodists from the Dakotas Annual (regional)
Conference have completed the first step in their flood fight: filling
sandbags. Operations at a warehouse dubbed Sandbag Central wrapped up March
11 as volunteers put the finishing touches on about 2.5 million bags. The
   effort began on Valentine's Day.
The National Weather Service is predicting a third straight year of major
Red River flooding in the Fargo and Moorhead, Minn., area, prompting
officials to begin making sandbags a month earlier than last year. The river
is expected to crest in late March or early April.
