Despite continuing aftershocks, food and fuel shortages and the radiation threat from a damaged nuclear plant, United Methodist missionaries in Japan are continuing to work. [19]Read full story and post a comment» NATO asked to remove nuclear weapons NEW YORK (UMNS) — The U.S. National Council of Churches has joined with three ecumenical partners on both sides of the Atlantic to urge NATO to remove all U.S. nuclear weapons in Europe. Letters were sent to NATO, U.S. and Russian leaders in mid-March by the heads of the NCC, the World Council of Churches, the Conference of European Churches and the Canadian Council of Churches. [20]Read letter here» Interpreter: Responding to Disaster in Japan NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Interpreter) — Since ancient times, natural disasters have sparked the “Why?” question. For people of faith, the question becomes “Why, God?” They are asking it again in the wake of the devastating March 11 earthquake and tsunami and continuing nuclear threat in Japan. Many United Methodists encourage accepting the unknowable and seek to make the question, “Where is God in all of this?” United Methodist News Service commentaries written after the 2004 tsunami in Indonesia and the 2010 Haiti earthquake may be helpful discussion starters.
