“The hardest thing in Japan right now is trying to get the correct
information. There's so many voices saying this and that, but when we look
at the people in the community, although worried, they are carrying on as
   normal.” — Jonathan McCurley, missionary.

Windsor Village models diversity

HOUSTON (UMNS) – As the first white pastor at the predominantly
African-American Windsor Village United Methodist Church, the Rev. Kimberly
Orr is making her own way with the blessings of the Rev. Kirbyjon Caldwell
and the 18,000-plus members who make up the largest United Methodist
   congregation in the United States.

Mission work continues in Japan, despite fears

TOKYO (UMNS) — It’s planting time at the Asian Rural Institute in northern
Japan, and the staff is in the fields when they aren’t cleaning up damage
caused by the powerful March 11 earthquake that shook the region. Despite
continuing aftershocks, food and fuel shortages and the radiation threat
from a damaged nuclear plant, United Methodist missionaries in Japan are
   continuing to work.

What St. Patrick can teach United Methodists

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) — The saint Americans celebrate each March 17 was
not born in Ireland, and his birth name might not even have been Patrick.
While many of the details of his life are shrouded in legend, on this
scholars agree: The patron saint of Ireland left a legacy far more vibrant
and lasting than the green beverages and food served on his feast day. And
his life and ministry offer lessons for United Methodists today.

NATO asked to remove nuclear weapons

NEW YORK (UMNS) — The U.S. National Council of Churches has joined with
three ecumenical partners on both sides of the Atlantic to urge NATO to
remove all U.S. nuclear weapons in Europe. Letters were sent to NATO, U.S.
and Russian leaders in mid-March by the heads of the NCC, the World Council
of Churches, the Conference of European Churches and the Canadian Council of
   Churches.

Interpreter: Responding to Disaster in Japan

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Interpreter) — Since ancient times, natural disasters have
sparked the “Why?” question. For people of faith, the question becomes “Why,
God?” They are asking it again in the wake of the devastating March 11
earthquake and tsunami and continuing nuclear threat in Japan.
Many United Methodists encourage accepting the unknowable and seek to make
the question, “Where is God in all of this?” United Methodist News Service
commentaries written after the 2004 tsunami in Indonesia and the 2010 Haiti
earthquake may be helpful discussion starters. Also provided [21]here are
links to other resources offered by United Methodist agencies in the wake of
   the disaster.
