“Pastor Caldwell reminds us all the time that sheep beget sheep. We make it
a priority to equip the saints for the work of the ministry.” — Millicent
Haynes of Windsor Village United Methodist Church

Windsor Village builds a new social landscape

HOUSTON (UMNS) — When the Rev. Kirbyjon Caldwell was appointed to Windsor
Village United Methodist Church in 1982, there were about “25 faithful
members” in the pews on Sunday. The neighborhood was full of blight. Windsor
Village now has a membership of more than 18,000, and the neighborhood has
grown from blight to a mini-city.

Missionaries have complex history in Japan

NEW YORK (GBGM) — United Methodist response to the March 11 earthquake in
Japan puts the spotlight on a rich mission history that began 135 years ago.
The United Methodist Board of Global Ministries and the United Methodist
Committee on Relief are working in the crisis with church organizations that
continue a mission story that opened in 1873, the year the first Methodist
   missionary arrived in Japan.

Blog: A big wave stirs memories

NEW YORK (UMNS) — In her blog, UMNS reporter Linda Bloom remembers some
long-ago ties to Japan and the experience of visiting Banda Aceh in
Indonesia 18 days after the 2004 Asia tsunami, where she found miles of
destruction but signs of hope as well.

Grant helps provide mentors for prisoners’ children

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) — A $7,300 grant from the Human Relations Day
offering will enable the [23]Commission on United Methodist Men to continue
recruiting adults to serve as mentors of children of incarcerated parents
through the Amachi program of Big Brothers Big Sisters. In 2010, the
commission recruited 41 adults in 12 annual (regional) conferences to serve
as mentors. Those conferences continue to recruit individuals who are
willing to spend at least one hour a week with these children.

The Human Relations Day grant, awarded by the [24]United Methodist Board of
Church and Society, will enable the commission to introduce or expand the
Amachi program in Denver, San Diego, Phoenix, Kansas City, Atlanta and
Oklahoma City or Tulsa. “Amachi” is a Nigerian Ibo word that means, “Who
knows but what God has brought us through this child.”

New top executive named for higher education agency

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) — The United Methodist Board of Higher Education and
Ministry’s directors unanimously elected the Rev. Kim Cape to lead the
agency as its new top executive. The directors voted during their March
17-19 spring meeting in Nashville. Cape is the former executive director of
New Church Growth and Transformation for the Southwest Texas Annual
   (regional) Conference.
