“Three years ago, I wouldn’t have been able to help a lot of these people. I
wasn’t physically able to do what needed to be done, but I wasn’t inspired
to help either. But God changed me. No child needs to go to bed hungry.” —
The Rev. C. Ray Davis, nominated for Energizer Keep Going Hall of Fame.

Feeding others…pastor keeps going and going

MARION, N.C. (UMNS) — Ten years ago, a heart surgeon sent the Rev. C. Ray
Davis home with a bottle of pain pills and the gloomy news that he had two
weeks to live. Now, some liken the 55-year-old United Methodist pastor to
the “Energizer Bunny.” Davis preaches for five weekly worship services and
coordinates 19 outreach ministries at his small, but spirited, 200-member
   church.

Japanese Christians begin relief work

SENDAI, Japan (UMNS) — “The needs far surpass our ability to provide,” a
missionary says. The United Methodist relief agency is responding with
emergency funds to the United Church of Christ in Japan, which is using the
funds to distribute food, clean water, clothing and heating fuel. The
Japanese government has requested that outside groups not come to Japan.

Web course tackles faith and immigration

PHOENIX (UMNS) — The Rev. Jim Perdue, National Plan for Hispanic/Latino
Ministry missionary assigned to the Desert-Southwest Annual (regional)
Conference, will present a free webinar on the intersection of the Christian
faith and immigration. The seminar will be April 25-June 17. It will explore
various Bible verses as well as the book “Christians at the Border.”
The course is open to people who commit to leading at least one related

Board of Discipleship celebrates 2010 successes

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) — Directors of the United Methodist Board of
Discipleship gathered for a March 16-19 meeting in which they marked some of
   the agency’s successes:
     * New Church Starts (Path 1), an agency program, which helped plant more
       than 340 congregations since 2008, a 33-percent growth over the 2004-07
period. New Church Starts (Path 1) also has assessed 1,218 prospective
planters and equipped 618 through national training events.
     * Upper Room Ministries, which reported that book sales were up in 2010.
The Upper Room also created new language editions of its daily
devotional — Ilokano in the Philippines and French in Côte d’Ivoire.
     * The Upper Room’s 75th anniversary campaign, which resulted in a
60-percent increase in individual contributions and more than 3,500
       first-time donors.
     * Expanding e-learning opportunities, such as the leadership webinars
being planned on topics such as Easter, pastoral changes and summertime
       discipleship.
