“I think all Christians should at the very least hold out hope that God will
not give up on Creation until ALL is reconciled and redeemed: every last
sheep, every last prodigal, every last coin.” — Chad Holtz, North Carolina
                               student pastor

Post on hell lands pastor in hot water

HENDERSON, N.C. (UMNS) — A Facebook post questioning the existence of an
eternal hell proved to be the point of no return for a United Methodist
student pastor and his rural North Carolina congregation. But there is more
to the story than what has been widely reported about Chad Holtz’s departure
from Marrow’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Henderson, N.C. Chad Holtz
has been [17]widely reported to have lost his pulpit at Marrow’s Chapel in
Henderson, N.C., after stating his support of a new book by the Rev. Rob
Bell, an evangelical megachurch pastor, online.

New rule for schools: more clergy, more money

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) — United Methodist schools of theology that educate
more students for ordained ministry in the denomination will get more church
funding in 2012 under a new formula for distributing money from the
Ministerial Education Fund. The directors of [19]The United Methodist Board
of Higher Education and Ministry had approved the changes last fall, but
tweaked the formula at the spring 2011 meeting to include money for
full-time United Methodist faculty and senior administrators at the
   seminaries.

Clergywomen struggle despite open doors

LAKE GROVE, N.Y. (UMNS) — In a UMNS commentary, the Rev. Constance Y. Pak, a
former third-generation Presbyterian, talks about the joy of being part of
“the beautiful mosaic faith community of The United Methodist Church,” but
also acknowledges that there are continuing barriers faced by ethnic women
pastors. “However, I think of this positively,” she writes. “Wherever we go,
we are history makers: the first non-Caucasian and often the first female
   pastor in a congregation’s history.”

Japanese council offers thanks for prayers, gifts

TOKYO (UMNS) — The National Council of Churches in Japan is expressing
thanks to “friends and ecumenical partners in Christ” from around the world
for their “generous gifts and prayerful support” following the March 11
   earthquake and tsunami.

In a March 25 letter, the council reported that it has held consultations
with national church partners and member organizations and will coordinate
the distribution of relief materials and locating temporary housing for
   those displaced by the disaster.

“We have become an indispensable hub for sharing information and dispatching
goods and personnel to the worst-hit areas in coordination with the newly
established Christian Coalition in Sendai, which includes the United Church
of Christ in Japan (Kyodan), The Evangelical Alliance Mission, various other
Protestant bodies and the Roman Catholic Church,” the letter said.

NCC ‘deplores’ Jerusalem bombing

NEW YORK (UMNS) — The National Council of Churches deplored the March 23
bombing of a crowded bus in Jerusalem that killed a woman and injured at
least 24 persons. "In the 61 years of its existence, the National Council of
Churches has consistently condemned violence as a tactic for advancing
political ideology," said the Rev. Michael Kinnamon, NCC top executive. "The
bomb that tore through this bus served no earthly cause but was a murderous
assault on all that Christians, Muslims and Jews deem holy."

Religion and Race questions legislator’s comments

WASHINGTON (UMNS) — The United Methodist Commission on Religion and Race has
voiced concern over remarks from Virgil Peck, a Kansas legislator,
suggesting that using violence and air attacks could solve the state's
immigration problems. Peck later agreed to apologize for the comments.
