"I chose the United Methodist Children’s Home as my charity because it’s a
personal thing for me. My family took in some foster kids when I was young,
so I know the importance. Every kid deserves a good home and the best
opportunities.” — Lil Jon, rapper and "Celebrity Apprentice" contestant.

Login or logout of Facebook for Lent?

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) — During Lent – the 40 days between Ash Wednesday
and Easter – United Methodists and Christians everywhere often sacrifice
something meaningful to them: candy, soda, alcohol, even red meat. It is a
way to prepare spiritually for Easter and to move closer to God. This year,
thousands have joined a mini-trend: attempting to give up Facebook. They
have even created a Facebook page. It is a way to say, “Farewell for now,
   see you in 40 days.”

Rapper wins $40K for UM children’s home

ATLANTA (UMNS) — The big “Celebrity Apprentice” winner Sunday night wasn’t
just Lil Jon – it was also children and youth at a north Georgia United
Methodist Children’s Home. The rapper and “Celebrity Apprentice” contestant
won $40,000 for his first time as a project manager on the hit NBC show. His
designated charity is the North Georgia Annual (regional) Conference’s
   United Methodist Children’s Home.

Four programs receive Human Relations Day grants

FRUITLAND PARK, Fla. (GBCS) — Directors of the United Methodist Board of
Church and Society approved $89,300 in Human Relations Day grants at their
March spring meeting. The grants went to four programs: two in the
denomination’s Southeastern Jurisdiction, one in the South Central and one
to the Commission on United Methodist Men.

One of the church’s six Special Sundays offerings, Human Relations Day
strengthens United Methodist outreach to communities, encouraging social
justice and work with at-risk youth. Church and Society distributes 10
percent of the offering receipts for youth-offender rehabilitation programs.

Protesters attack school in Liberia

MONROVIA, Liberia (UMNS) — The J.J. Roberts United Methodist School was
closed temporarily March 23 after student protesters from the Monrovia
Consolidated School System threw heavy rocks and other objects onto the
campus, endangering students and damaging property. The protesters were
supporting their teachers who have been in a go-slow (deliberately slowing
the rate of work without striking) over salaries and incentives.
Demonstrators alleged that the private J.J. Roberts is an elitist school,
attended by children of government officials, while public schools are
neglected and teachers are not paid adequately.

J.J. Roberts principal Samuel Sagbeh expressed sympathy for the protesters
and said the school probably would remain closed until the Liberian
government resolved the situation with the government teachers. He disputed
the “elitist” allegation, saying the school’s tuition and fees are less than
those charged before the Liberian civil conflict began.

Communicator Ann Whiting dies

LINCOLN, R.I. (UMNS) — The Rev. Ann Whiting, 63, former editor of Zion’s
Herald and the Michigan Christian Advocate and a deacon in the New England
Annual (regional) Conference, died March 28 in Rhode Island. Whiting served
as president of the United Methodist Association of Communicators in the
early 1990s and won many UMAC awards for her writing.

“Ann was a passionate communicator who loved the church and her task of
communicating news and information about the church,” said Dan Gangler,
director of communications for the Indiana Annual Conference. “I will miss
her high-pitched New England voice and her candidness – she told it like she
saw it. I appreciated her dedicated and thorough reporting and editing. I
miss her being part of our community of faith.” A service is being planned
at Wesley United Methodist Church in Lincoln.
