Illinois chooses life over death penalty

   SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (UMNS) - On Ash Wednesday, March 9, Illinois Governor Pat
   Quinn abolished the death penalty, making it the 16th state to choose life
   over death. United Methodists have been working to get the death penalty
   abolished worldwide since they first adopted a resolution at the 1956
   Methodist General Conference.

Human trafficking: From education to action

   NEW YORK (UMNS) - To date, a United Methodist Committee on Relief
   anti-trafficking project in Armenia has helped 93 women move on to new lives
   after becoming entangled in what is considered the second-largest and
   fastest-growing global criminal enterprise. Kathryn Paik, UMCOR's Armenia
   program officer, and two staff executives with United Methodist Women, Carol
   Van Gorp and Susie Johnson, spoke about how [17]United Methodists are
   addressing the human-trafficking problem during a March 28 panel discussion.

Leadership Summit to draw global participation

   NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) – A summit for those interested in the role of
   annual (regional) conferences and local churches in meeting challenges and
   making short-term and long-range changes will be webcast from 11 a.m. to 2
   p.m. Central Time on April 6, with conversation groups organized in
   episcopal areas. The United Methodist Church Leadership Summit is sponsored
   by the denomination’s Council of Bishops in cooperation with the
   Connectional Table.

Ethnic Local Church Grants awarded

   FRUITLAND PARK, Fla. (UMNS) - Directors of the United Methodist Board of
   Church and Society awarded $276,360 in Ethnic Local Church Grants at its
   spring meeting.
   The Ethnic Local Church Grants program aims to strengthen congregations
   through education, advocacy or leadership development for social-justice
   engagement. Grants are awarded twice each year. The $276,360 was split among
   10 programs in three U.S. jurisdictions and Central Conferences overseas.
