Alabama church shares heartbreak, hope

HARVEST, Ala. (UMNS) -- Beneath sunny skies, people greeted one another with
hugs, tears and comforting words. It was a Sunday morning unlike any other
at Ford’s Chapel United Methodist Church in north Alabama. Much of the
surrounding community lay in ruins, and the church’s white steeple no longer
   rose from the sanctuary roof.

Court voids new policy on clergy marriage

DETROIT (UMNS) — A policy adopted but not yet implemented by United
Methodists in New York and Connecticut that essentially would have allowed
clergy to marry someone of the same sex has been declared “null, void and of
no effect” by the denomination’s top court. The action came during the
   Judicial Council’s April 27-29 meeting.

Top court looks at requests to review decisions

DETROIT (UMNS) — The United Methodist Church’s top court is not obliged to
respond to every request for reconsideration of a 2005 decision related to
whether a pastor can deny local church membership to a gay or lesbian
person. That and matters for possible reconsideration were on the agenda
during the April 27-29 Judicial Council meeting.

Bishops to change ecumenical agency

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. (UMNS) – United Methodist bishops voted
overwhelmingly May 2 to support folding the denomination’s ecumenical
agency, the Commission on Christian Unity and Interreligious Concerns, and
its work into the Council of Bishops.

Celebrating the death of Bin Laden?

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) – In his blog, the Rev. Larry Hollon ponders the
ambivalent feelings that some Christians may have about the killing of Osama
Bin Laden. While the Al Qaeda leader’s actions and words “were utterly
evil,” Jesus did not live by the sword.

Bin Laden’s death prompts call for peace witness

NEW YORK (UMNS)—Three United Methodist church leaders have signed an
ecumenical statement expressing hope that Osama Bin Laden’s death will
prompt churches to commit being witnesses for peace. The al-Qaida leader’s
death is significant, but it won’t end terrorism, the National Council of
Churches said May 3. “Now the member communions of the National Council of
Churches pray for God's help as we commit ourselves to moving forward
together as witnesses for God's love and peace.”
The 18 U.S. church leaders who signed the statement include Bishop Larry
Goodpaster, president of the United Methodist Council of Bishops; Bishop
Sharon Zimmerman Rader, ecumenical officer; and the Rev. Stephen J. Sidorak
Jr., top staff executive of the denomination’s Commission on Christian Unity
   and Interreligious Concerns.

Use new media responsibly, Christian communicators say

TORONTO (UMNS) – The World Association for Christian Communication is
marking World Press Freedom Day, May 3, by calling on communicators to use
new media responsibly in order to strengthen press freedom and communication
   rights worldwide.

                                                  [25]Read the statement»
