[23]Read blog» Bin Laden’s death prompts call for peace witness NEW YORK (UMNS)—Three United Methodist church leaders have signed an ecumenical statement expressing hope that Osama Bin Laden’s death will prompt churches to commit being witnesses for peace. The al-Qaida leader’s death is significant, but it won’t end terrorism, the National Council of Churches said May 3. “Now the member communions of the National Council of Churches pray for God's help as we commit ourselves to moving forward together as witnesses for God's love and peace.” The 18 U.S. church leaders who signed the statement include Bishop Larry Goodpaster, president of the United Methodist Council of Bishops; Bishop Sharon Zimmerman Rader, ecumenical officer; and the Rev. Stephen J. Sidorak Jr., top staff executive of the denomination’s Commission on Christian Unity and Interreligious Concerns.
