“I support it with the understanding that it’s not just an additional
structure, but someone who can focus us, even shepherd us, in the
mission.” – Bishop Eben Nhiwatiwa, speaking on a proposal to redefine the
presidency of the Council of Bishops.

Bishops seek change in presidency

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. (UMNS) – United Methodist bishops approved a proposal
May 4 that would significantly redefine the role of president for the
Council of Bishops. The amendment to the church’s constitution would allow
the council to elect one of its own to a full-time, four-year position
without the usual responsibilities of overseeing a geographic area. The
president also would serve as the denomination’s chief ecumenical officer.

Lara Logan and the use of rape as a weapon

NEW YORK (UMNS) – In her “Bloombytes” blog, UMNS reporter Linda Bloom notes
that CBS correspondent Lara Logan’s recounting of the horrific sexual
assault against her in Cairo’s Tahrir Square “is just one example of the
terror suffered by anonymous women around the world.”

Candler receives $325,000 grant for model curriculum

ATLANTA (UMNS) – Emory University’s Candler School of Theology has been
awarded a $325,000 grant from the Henry Luce Foundation to create an
international model curriculum for accredited North American seminaries.

“The Christian church has been profoundly affected by the trends that
closely connect different parts of the globe to each other, and Christian
leaders must be prepared to cultivate an understanding of the world’s
cultural and religious differences,” said Jan Love, the United Methodist
dean of Candler. “This generous grant from the Luce Foundation makes it
possible for Candler to create a curriculum more fully reflective of
international realities that can be modeled in theological education
throughout the United States and beyond.”

College’s 1970 class gets commencement

AUGUSTA, Ga. (UMNS) – Paine College’s Class of 1970 finally participated in
commencement exercises on May 1 – four decades after graduating. The United
Methodist-related school was closed temporarily and commencement cancelled
in May 1970 due to a race riot in Augusta. The riot and subsequent protests
were sparked by the death of a 16-year-old in the county jail. Paine’s
graduating seniors received their diplomas in the mail.

The Class of 1970 was recognized with the Class of 2011 and the Golden Class
of 1961 at Paine’s most recent commencement last weekend. Fifteen of the 95
students in the 1970 class walked across the stage to receive their diploma,
   The Augusta Chronicle reported.

Church plans health campaign for Mozambique

NEW YORK (UMNS) – Planning is under way for distributing 100,000 mosquito
nets and training 550 community health workers in Mozambique in July through
the Imagine No Malaria campaign. An estimated 36,000 children under age 5
die from malaria each year in Mozambique, according to the National Malaria
   Control Program.

The Imagine No Malaria team from the United Methodist Committee on Relief
will work in partnership with The Global Fund, Nothing But Nets, the
Missouri Annual Conference and community organizations. Bishop Joaquina
Nhanala of Mozambique said she is looking forward to the program. “This
allows us to be the church we need to be.”

In addition, the Imagine No Malaria documentary, “A Killer in the Dark,” is
being shown in markets around the United States. Upcoming broadcasts on NBC
affiliates will include May 8 in Sinas, Calif.; June 12 in Youngstown, Ohio,
Eria, Pa., and Fort Worth, Texas; and July 26 in Minneapolis. Details are
   available at [18]www.imaginenomalaria.org.
