Nollau Institute introduces innovative CHHSM leadership program
Written by Staff Reports May 5, 2011
The Council for Health and Human Service Ministries' (CHHSM) new leadership formation program, the Nollau Institute, convenes its inaugural class in St. Louis beginning in September. "I'm very excited about this worthy successor to CHHSM's previous leadership formation programs," says the Rev. William Johnson, CHHSM vice president and the new Institute's administrator. "Nollau Institute classes will examine contemporary dimensions of effective leadership and the integration of personal faith with the Christian vocation of servant-leader." Mentors will enrich class members' journey as they explore their individual commitments to faith-based service, says Johnson. "Discernment regarding consecration as a CHHSM Diakonal Minister will also be part of the process. All of this will take place within a vital, caring and supportive community of colleagues."
Succeeding nearly 20 years of former CHHSM leadership development programs ? the Transformational Leadership Program (TLP) and the Faith Based Leadership Institute (FBLI) ? the Nollau Institute will draw upon the best in adult education and leadership training. Grounded in a fundamental appreciation of faith heritage and spiritual formation, the focus remains on nurturing leadership that exemplifies professional excellence rooted in faith-based purpose.
The Institute ? named after Louis Edward Nollau, a 19th-century missionary, preacher and founder of several St. Louis-area CHHSM ministries ? is open to leaders from CHHSM member ministries and partnering organizations including colleges, seminaries, conferences, national staff and other UCC-related entities. Residency in the St. Louis area is not required, but students must be able to fully participate in all sessions of the 11-month study, reflection and mentoring program. An application form is available on the CHHSM website <chhsm.org/leaders/nollau>. The application deadline for this year's event is July 1, and class size will be limited to maximize dialogue and learning. Additional details about the Institute design, curriculum and cost are posted on the web site. For further questions, email Johnson at <johnsonw@chhsm.org> or call 866-822-8224 ext. 2256. Nollau Institute sessions are planned for 2012-13, but the site has not yet been determined, says Johnson.
