“If something like this ever happens to you — God forbid — God will help you

   Kelly Clem

African clergywomen find voice, claim rights

KAMPALA, Uganda (UMNS) — In traditional African settings, women were
regarded as being behind the doors – voiceless, with no defined rights in
economic, social, political or religious affairs. However, the denomination
has made strides to lift up women, and plans are under way for a gathering
that will honor Africa’s first woman bishop and strengthen the network of
   clergywomen on the continent.

Losses and lessons from 1994 tornadoes

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The April 27 tornadoes that cut through Alabama brought
back tragic memories for the Rev. Kelly Clem. On Palm Sunday in 1994, a
tornado struck the sanctuary in which she was preaching, killing 20 people
   – including her 4-year-old daughter, Hannah. Now, she uses the lessons she
learned to help others cope with grief, disaster and loss.

Peace Conference examines poverty’s roots

LAKE JUNALUSKA, N.C. (UMNS) — A former presidential nominee and a prominent
anti-poverty advocate are slated to speak at the Nov. 13-15 Lake Junaluska
Peace Conference, “Poverty, Abundance and Peace.” Speakers will include
George McGovern, a United Methodist, former U.S. senator and 1972 Democratic
presidential nominee; the Rev. David Beckmann, president of Bread for the
World, a United Methodist partner agency, and United Methodist Bishop
NkulaNtambo of the Katanga Conference in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

This year, the conference will focus on seeking economic justice for all of
God’s children. In keeping with the conference’s commitment to interfaith
peacemaking, the conference also will feature a panel of Jewish, Muslim and
Christian scholars on the topic “Our Sacred Texts Speak to Us in Regard to
   Peace, Justice and Economics.”

Nothing but Nets to help Côte d’Ivoire refugees

WASHINGTON —The United Nations Foundation’s Nothing But Nets campaign
announced May 10 that it had reached its goal of sending lifesaving,
anti-malaria bed nets to protect families who had fled violence in Côte
d’Ivoire, with contributions totaling $350,000 from grass-roots supporters.
The goal was reached in one month, with the help of a $50,000 donation from
   the Union for Reform Judaism.

“We are thrilled to have reached the goal of sending bed nets to protect
Ivoirian families in the U.N. refugee camp in Liberia so quickly,” said
Elizabeth Gore, a United Methodist and the U.N. Foundation’s executive
director of global partnerships. “In honor of World Malaria Day, Nothing But
Nets’ partners and thousands of supporters came together to help their peers
across the globe—we are truly moved by their enthusiasm and generosity.”
