“It wasn’t as bad as we were afraid it would be, but we’re not out of the
woods yet.” — The Rev. Jay Smith of the Memphis Annual (regional)
   Conference.

Drenched communities pray levees will hold

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (UMNS) — As the Mississippi River crests in Memphis,
residents brace for its mighty surge downstream and others pray levees in
already-soaked areas will hold. As melted snow and record rainfall flood
communities across the United States, United Methodists are responding and
   reaching out.

Jamaica event to continue focus on peace

NEW YORK (UMNS) — A number of United Methodists plan to be at
the [18]International Ecumenical Peace Convocation in Kingston, Jamaica.
These church members are still searching for the ways to build "just peace"
as the World Council of Churches’ “Decade to Overcome Violence” ends. Jan
Love, a United Methodist who served as chairwoman of the decade-long
campaign for five years, will be among the participants.

UMTV: Car Care for Single Moms

ATLANTA (UMNS) —Single moms like Amber McCain enjoyed a little break last
weekend, as volunteers from City on a Hill United Methodist Church pumped
free gas, washed windshields, checked oil and even handed out food coupons
and cold drinks. Every Mother’s Day, church members donate a day of car
service and the gift of gasoline to single mothers.

Registration urged for Change the World

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) — United Methodist Communications requests that
churches participating in Change the World 2011 register at
[22]www.umcom.org/changetheworld. The days of service are set for May 14-15.
Registration will put participating congregations on the map so others can
find them, and will help stories be shared throughout the world.
United Methodist Communications also urges participating congregations to
email their best photos people in action to
[23]changetheworldmedia@umcom.org and they will be added to the Flickr
slideshow on rethinkchurch.org. Include church name, city and state in the
subject line of emails. Participating churches also can upload video to
YouTube and share the link via The United Methodist Church Facebook page at
   [24]https://www.facebook.com/unitedmethodistchurch.

Presbyterians to allow gay clergy

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (UMNS) — A majority of the 173 presbyteries of the
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) have approved a change in the denomination’s
ordination standards that will permit the ordination of gay clergy.

On May 10, the Presbytery of Twin Cities Area became the 87th presbytery to
approve an amendment that will remove the constitutional requirement that
all clergy, deacons and elders live in “fidelity within the covenant of
marriage between a man and a woman or chastity in singleness.” Deacons and
elders are ordained lay leaders in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).
Instead, the denomination’s ordination standards now emphasize submission to
   the “Lordship of Jesus Christ.”

The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), a frequent United Methodist ecumenical
partner, joins the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the Episcopal
Church and the United Church of Christ among mainline Protestant
denominations that permit the ordination of gays and lesbians. Efforts to
change United Methodist ordination standards have repeatedly failed at
General Conference, the denomination’s top legislative assembly.
