Christopher Sloan, pastor of Christ's Community United Methodist Church. Police chaplain serves the tornado-stricken in Minneapolis MINNEAPOLIS (UMNS) –– The Rev. Linda Koelman, a United Methodist pastor, is working with her fellow Minneapolis Police Department chaplains and the Red Cross to provide resources and temporary shelter to those made homeless after a May 22 tornado struck the west and north sides of the city. (UMNS) –– Several United Methodist churches here were scrambling to provide shelter Monday morning for church members and others whose homes were damaged by a tornado the day before. (UMNS) –– More than 2,000 individual churches in 15 countries participated in Change the World events. Many engaged in environmentally friendly projects. Wayne (N.J.) United Methodist Church planted a community garden in nearby Paterson. Joseph (Ore.) United Methodist Church joined a school to start a garden to combat childhood obesity. [15]Read full story and post a comment» NCC women voice support for anti-violence act NEW YORK (UMNS) –– In a message to women participants at the May 17-25 International Ecumenical Peace Convocation in Jamaica, the Justice for Women Working Group of the U.S. National Council of Churches voiced support for the International Violence Against Women Act. "We know there is a link between poverty and violence against women," the letter said. "We know that when women have access to education and employment opportunities, their families and communities have become more stable and safe."
