“When I get the skills in tailoring and start my own business, I will be
able to pay my household utilities, help in the development of the church
and also help my friends who have the same problems.” — Lucy Singini, sewing
   student.

Book explores ‘when pastors prey’

KINGSTON, Jamaica (UMNS) — A book focused on the prevention of the sexual
abuse of women by clergy in all cultures was launched during the
International Ecumenical Peace Convocation. “When Priests and Pastors
Prey” includes stories from women survivors of clergy sexual abuse and
examples of best practices in churches and religious groups.

Malawi school forms Christian entrepreneurs

MZUZU, Malawi (UMNS) — Inside a dilapidated building illuminated with only
window light, women are learning to become entrepreneurs. The sewing school,
started by a United Methodist pastor, has trained 11 poor women to start
tailoring businesses. Many are the widows of polygamous marriages.

Bloombytes: Tornado damage of Katrina-like proportions

NEW YORK (UMNS) — Joplin is just the latest — and deadliest — example of how
this spring’s U.S. tornado activity is setting new records for death and
destruction. But, as UMNS reporter Linda Bloom writes in her blog, more
donations will be needed for the denomination’s relief efforts.

Detroit church vies for $500,000 for poverty projects

DETROIT (UMNS) — United Methodist Cass Community Social Services is in the
final round of the Chase Community Giving Facebook contest where the top

round, placing in the top 100 among 11,000 nonprofits.
Cass will use whatever funds it receives to expand its Green Industries
program, increase employment opportunities, bring greater energy efficiency
to the agency’s buildings and replace inefficient vehicles, allowing the
ministry to increase its geographic scope and transportation services. The
ministry offers a variety of services to homeless men, women and children,
   including job training.

Voting started on May 19 and will continue through May 25. To vote for Cass
   Community Social Services, visit [22]www.casscommunity.org.
