“Look for God in the future. God is present in picking up the pieces, in
people who will help, in new friendships, in the healing that will happen
and in appreciation of what you do have.” –– The Rev. Kelly Clem, pastor of
   Holmes Street United Methodist Church

Twisters déjà vu for Alabama pastor

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. –– In 1994, the Rev. Kelly Clem was serving as a pastor in
Piedmont, Ala., when a tornado struck her church on Palm Sunday. She offered
a message of hope at that time. She gave the same message to victims of
   recent twisters near Huntsville.

Can Christians embrace faith and science?

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) –– Since Jan. 1, 2011, legislators in seven states
have introduced nine bills attacking evolution education. In response, some
United Methodists are asking why science and the church can’t coexist. In
2008, General Conference passed a statement declaring scientific
“descriptions of cosmological, geological, and biological evolution are not
   in conflict with theology.”

It's time for people of faith to accept evolution

FORT WAYNE, IND. (UMNS) –– In a UMNS commentary, Al Kuelling, a retired
physicist, says, “It’s time for The United Methodist Church to overcome its
qualms about evolution for the sake of our children, each other and the
future of society to work together in accepting the findings of science.
Together we need to correct the misconceptions and discard the myths.”

Choirs sought for General Conference

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) –– United Methodist choirs and ensembles from around
the world may now audition online for an invitation to perform at the 2012
General Conference, The United Methodist Church’s top legislative assembly
which meets in Tampa, Fla., beginning April 24, 2012.

To apply for an invitation to General Conference, choirs and ensembles are
asked to submit a letter of application to gc2012worship@gmail.com,
including a brief bio and a YouTube video link of the group performing. The
deadline for applications is July 31, 2011.

“As always, we look forward to having musicians and artists from across the
connection involved in leading the people of God in worship at General
Conference,” said Marcia McFee, worship director for 2012 General
Conference. “This ministry of worship and inspiration is vital for those
delegates and leaders who spend many days in discernment and work on behalf
of our denomination. To come to General Conference takes a lot of dedication
and work for the groups who are selected and invited. We honor this gift
   they give to the church.”

Invited choirs will perform at lunch and during evening worship at General
Conference. Choirs are responsible for their own expenses.

UMNS to provide more coverage of tornado responses

Powerful tornadoes and other extreme weather events have cut swaths of

   records.
On Thursday, May 26, United Methodist News Service will detail United
Methodist recovery efforts in Joplin, along with responses to the May 24
storms that ravaged Oklahoma, Arkansas and Kansas.
