“One of the things I love about Stop Hunger Now is that the solution to the
hunger in the world already exists; we just have to decide to make it a
reality. And you and I can do that one child, one meal and one quarter at a
time.” –– The Rev. Nathaniel Long, a United Methodist pastor in Georgia

Hog Father boosts hunger-relief effort

SENOIA, Ga. (UMNS) — The Rev. Nathaniel Long, a North Georgia pastor who
calls himself The Hog Father, joined three other United Methodist clergy to
live only on Stop Hunger Now packets throughout Lent as a way to raise funds
for the effort to end hunger around the world. He and other members of
United Methodist Men are deeply involved in feeding the hungry.

In Joplin, faith remains where little else stands

JOPLIN, Mo. (UMNS) –– The worship center of St. Paul’s United Methodist
Church was severely damaged by the May 22 tornado that tore through this
city. The children’s wing, which suffered less damage, was opened as a
triage unit after a nearby hospital was destroyed. St. James United
Methodist Church, which stood near the Home Depot where seven bodies were
recovered, was leveled. The denomination is preparing to respond at all
   levels to the stricken community.

Churches help storm-weary heartland

PIEDMONT, Okla. (UMNS) — Just two days after the deadliest tornado in U.S.
records devastated Joplin, Mo., another line of twisters battered Oklahoma,
Kansas, Arkansas and Texas. As in Missouri, United Methodists in the most
recently pummeled states are doing what they can to pick up the pieces. They
are providing neighbors with emergency provisions, salvaging whatever they
can and joining together to pray and mourn lost loved ones.

Longtime Cokesbury employee dies

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) — Cedric Foley, 68, a 37-year employee of the United
Methodist Publishing House, died May 22.
He began his work at publishing house as a shift cleaner in the Parthenon
printing plant in 1968. He held a number of positions in the manufacturing,
public relations and retail divisions until retiring as seminars coordinator
in 2005. Following his retirement, he worked part time in the Cokesbury
Direct Sales Call Center until his death. Foley operated Cokesbury book
sales at annual conferences, special events and worked on the Daily
Christian Advocate staff and Cokesbury sales area at nine General Conference
   sessions.
“Cedric epitomized in every way the qualities of love of God and neighbor
and passion for our servant ministry,” said Neil Alexander, president and
publisher of the United Methodist Publishing House. “Cedric was the most
trustworthy and friendly person anyone could expect in every
   circumstance.”
