"Ministry with the poor is at the heart of our faith. It is where we combine
mercy and justice and put our faith into action." - Jim Winkler of the
United Methodist Board of Church and Society.

New site highlights ministries with the poor

NEW YORK (UMNS) - A new interactive website, www.ministryWITH.org,
highlights the commitment by The United Methodist Church to "Ministry With
the Poor." One example of such ministry is the West Side Campaign Against
Hunger, where staff members and "customers" make the food pantry function.

Older-adult ministries grow with population

COLUMBIA, S.C. (UMNS) - As just-turned-70 Bob Dylan croons, "The times they
are a-changin'," he could be singing about older adults and older-adult
ministry in The United Methodist Church. Interpreter Magazine reports how
Baby Boomers are leading churches to reconsider how they reach people in
   their golden years.

Joplin pastor: 'Death does not get the last word'

JOPLIN, Mo. (UMNS) - On May 29, Joplin pastors, Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon and
President Barack Obama each took the stage to offer comfort at a memorial
service for the 142 people who died in the previous week's tornado. The Rev.
Aaron Brown of St. Paul's United Methodist Church delivered the main
message. "To those families whose members have died, I think God is saying
to you right now that death does not get the last word," Brown said. "I
think God is saying to those families right now, this is what I wanted you
to see in the resurrection of Jesus that death doesn't win ever. Even when
   you think it does."

Pastor tells his story

JOPLIN, Mo. (UMNS) - The Rev. George Triplett of Trinity United Methodist
Church knows he is one of the very fortunate ones in Joplin. His house and
church were not damaged by the tornado. But the devastation still hit very
close to home. "My daughter lost everything, my sister lost everything, at
least five families in my congregation lost their homes, and a couple more
   homes were damaged," he said.
