Panel: Church is too U.S.-centric

   WICHITA, Kan. (UMNS) — The 20-member [17]Committee to Study the Worldwide
   Nature of The United Methodist Church is offering three ways to make the
   denomination less U.S.-centric and strengthen its worldwide connection. The
   committee seeks feedback to its ideas by June 15 and plans to release a full
   report in July.

Celebrating marriage during Sunday worship

   sermon that the Fieldstone United Methodist Church needed a wedding, a
   couple whose courtship started and flourished in the Christiansburg, Va.,
   congregation stepped forward. Interpreter shares the story.

Take tobacco out of the ballgame, faith leaders say

   WASHINGTON (UMNS) — Three United Methodist organizations are among 25 faith
   groups around the country calling for the Major League Baseball Players
   Association to agree to Commissioner Bud Selig’s proposed prohibition on
   tobacco use at games. The faith leaders join a growing coalition of medical
   groups, public-health officials and fans urging baseball to prohibit
   smokeless tobacco use in the contract that is to take effect next year.

   A letter sent today to the Michael Weiner, MLBPA executive director, was
   signed by Jim Winkler, chief executive of the General Board of Church and
   Society; Gil Hanke, top officer of United Methodist Men; and Julie Taylor,
   who chairs United Methodist Women’s Children, Youth and Family Advocacy.
   Winkler also serves as chair of Faith United Against Tobacco.

Aviation ministries in Congo to see improvements

   NEW YORK (UMNS) — Steps are under way to strengthen and coordinate The
   United Methodist Church's aviation ministries in the Democratic Republic of
   Congo. One goal is the purchase of a larger aircraft to replace one of the
   small planes now in service. The denomination’s West Ohio Annual (regional)
   Conference is raising the remaining million needed to buy a $1.6 million
   Cessna Caravan plane; $600,000 in donations or commitments is on hand.
   Sports figure Chris Spielman, a football analyst for ESPN, is heading up the
   campaign as honorary chairman.

UM-related book named as finalist for award

   NEW YORK (UMNS) — A book by W. Astor Kirk, “Ending Institutional
   Discrimination within United Methodism,” has been named a finalist in the
   religious nonfiction category of the 2011 Next Generation Indie Book Awards.
   Kirk, an African American who has spent years fighting segregation, is a
   member of Foundry United Methodist Church in Washington.
