“People continue to have a gut reaction to this disease unlike any other.
Even though people may know intellectually that they cannot contract it
through casual contact, there is still the gut reaction of fear and
repulsion and ‘what if?’ when encountering someone living with HIV.” — The
Rev. Gregory Gross, a United Methodist deacon and social worker

Thirty years later, AIDS stigma remains

CHICAGO (UMNS) — Thirty years ago, on June 5, we heard of AIDS — acquired
immune deficiency syndrome — for the first time. And while society has
become much more aware of AIDS and HIV, the stigma remains. The Rev. Gregory
Gross is among United Methodists trying to eliminate misconceptions and
   overcome fear.

UMTV: AIDS Awareness Church

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (UMNS) — Hollywood United Methodist Church, in the heart
of Los Angeles, found its congregation divided when AIDS was first
identified. But church members made a controversial decision to embrace
those living with HIV. Thirty years later, treatments and understanding of
the disease have come a long way, but church members continue outreach
efforts to adults and children living with HIV, taking meals and kind words
to patients at a clinic. “Some patients can go all day without having
anything to eat, a warm hug or a smile.”

Joplin response shows denomination’s strength

JOPLIN, Mo. (UMNS) — Church members have a lot of justified criticism about
the church’s bureaucracy, Jan Snider notes in a commentary. But days after a
deadly tornado leveled much of this town, she witnessed the power of the
denomination’s connectional system. The church’s system is getting people
the help and hope they need, writes Snider, a United Methodist
   Communications producer.

Agency awards $50,000 in Peace with Justice grants

WASHINGTON (UMNS) — The United Methodist Board of Church and Society has
awarded grants totaling $50,000 to 18 Peace with Justice ministries. The
grants are awarded in conjunction with the denomination’s Peace with Justice
Sunday, this year on June 19, which witnesses to God's demand for a
faithful, just, disarmed and secure world. Recipients were one Central
Conference project outside the United States and 17 programs in four of the
   five U.S. jurisdictions.

UMCOR provides aid to recent flood, twister survivors

NEW YORK (UMNS) — The United Methodist Committee on Relief has distributed
emergency grants to the New England and Yellowstone Annual (regional)
Conferences in the wake of natural disasters. Tornadoes struck Springfield,
Mass., on June 1, killing three people. Montana residents are evacuating
homes in low-lying areas to escape Missouri River flooding.

Update: 70 Minn. clergy support same-sex unions

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (UMNS) — The number of Minnesota United Methodist clergy
members endorsing a statement in favor of same-sex unions has increased from
40 to 70, about 15 percent of clergy at the annual conference session. The
clergy members signed a statement that says they would “offer the grace of
the Church’s blessing to any prepared couple desiring Christian marriage,”
   including same-sex couples.
