World Refugee Day photography exhibit features

refugee stories from Episcopal Migration Ministries

[June 14, 2011] The Episcopal Church and Episcopal Migration Ministries are  
among the sponsors of a June 22 photography exhibit in observance of World  
Refugee Day 2011.

The exhibit, A Celebration of Service, features moving photographs of refug ees 
who have resettled to the U.S. alongside the doctors, faith leaders, la wyers, 
business owners, farmers, case workers, teachers, and many others wh o welcome 
refugees into their communities.  The exhibit will be held 9 am t o 4 pm at the 
Rayburn House Office Building Foyer in Washington DC.

Episcopal Migration Ministries (EMM) is one of ten faith-based and communit y 
agencies nationally that assist refugees to resettle in the U.S. through  a 
public-private partnership with the federal government, specifically the  
Department of State, Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration. EMM curr 
ently partners with 27 dioceses of the Episcopal Church to assist refugees  in 
the resettlement process.

World Refugee Day is June 20. The exhibit was fashioned to honor this year' s 
60th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Status of Refuge es, 
which was created in 1951.

In marking World Refugee Day 2011 and the 60th anniversary of the refugee c 
onvention, Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori call s 
for a recommitment to the U.S. resettlement program and "to work toward s afety

>In the exhibit

Resettlement agencies across the country submitted photographs for consider 
ation in the exhibit.  Among the photos selected are three form EMM's local  
affiliate partners:

Agency for New Americans in Boise, ID, depicting the Global Gardens program  
which helps refugee farmers bring their produce to the Boise Saturday Mark et, 
growing crops that are both familiar and unfamiliar to Boiseans to expa nd 
their culinary tastes.

Minnesota Council of Churches (an affiliate of Church World Service and EMM ) 
in Minneapolis, MN, focusing on community garden plots which give residen ts 
access to healthy low cost food, helping refugee families from Burma, Ni geria 
and Bhutan.

Lutheran Social Services of Michigan (an affiliate of Lutheran Immigration  and 
Refugee Service and EMM) of Detroit, MI, showing a landlord who has pro vided 
refugees with reduced rents and waived security deposits in order to  make it 
easier for them to quickly move in.

EMM assists thousands of refugees annually, working together with faith gro ups 
and volunteers to help these newcomers find work and adjust to life in  their 
community. As such, EMM has welcomed to the U.S. refugees from throug hout the 
globe - Southeast Asia, former Eastern Bloc countries and the Sovi et Union, 
Cuba, Liberia, Sudan, Rwanda and Sierra Leone, Bosnia and Kosovo,  Afghanistan, 
and more recently from Colombia, the Democratic Republic of C ongo, Burundi, 
Bhutan, Burma, and Iraq.

With a network of 35 affiliate offices located in 27 dioceses, EMM relies g 
reatly on the support of churches to welcome refugees to the U.S.  Addition 
ally, dioceses, parishes and individuals often provide urgent assistance wi th 
funding and housing.

de refugiados de los

[14 de junio 2011] La Iglesia Episcopal y los Ministerios Episcopales de M 
igración se encuentran entre los patrocinadores de una exposición de fo 
tografías del 22 de junio en observancia de Día Mundial del Refugiado 2 011.

La exposición, Una Celebración de Servicio, exhibe impresionantes fotog rafías 
de refugiados que se han reasentado en EE.UU. junto con doctores,  líderes 
religiosos, abogados, empresarios, agricultores, trabajadores soc iales, 
maestros, y muchos otros que acogen a refugiados en sus comunidades.  La 
exposición se llevará a cabo de las nueve de la mañana a las cuat ro de la 
tarde en el Rayburn House Office Building Foyer en Washington DC.

Los Ministerios Episcopales de Migración (EMM) es una de las diez agencia s 
religiosas y comunitarias a nivel nacional que ayuda a los refugiados a e 
stablecerse en EE.UU. a través de una asociación público-privada con  el 
gobierno federal, específicamente el Departamento de Estado, Oficina d e 
Población, Refugiados y Migración. Los ministerios (EMM) en la actual idad 
tienen asociación con 27 diócesis de la Iglesia Episcopal para ayu dar a los 
refugiados en el proceso de establecerse.

La exposición fue diseñada para honrar el 60 º aniversario de la Conv ención de 
las Naciones Unidas sobre el Estatuto de los Refugiados, que fu e creado en 
1951.

Al resaltar el Día Mundial del Refugiado 2011 y el 60 º aniversario de  la 
convención sobre los refugiados, la Obispa Presidente de la Iglesia Ep iscopal 
Katharine Jefferts Schori pide un nuevo compromiso con el programa  de 
reasentamiento en EE.UU. y que se "trabaje por la seguridad de aquellos  que

En la exposición

Las agencias de reasentamiento en todo el país presentaron fotografías  para su 
consideración en la exposición. Entre las fotografías selecci onadas hay tres 
de lo socios afiliados locales de los ministerios (EMM):

La agencia de los Nuevos Americanos de Boise, ID, que representa el program a 
Jardines Globales que ayuda a los refugiados agricultores a llevar sus pr 
oductos al mercado del sábado de Boise, cultivos que son familiares y no  
familiares a los Boiseans para que amplíen sus gustos culinarios.

El Consejo de Iglesias de Minnesota (una filial del Servicio Mundial de Igl 
esias y de EMM) de Minneapolis, MN, centrándose en las parcelas de jard ín de 
la comunidad que dan a los residentes acceso a alimentos saludables  a bajo 
costo, y ayudan a familias de refugiados de Birmania, Nigeria y Bhu tán.

Los Servicios Sociales Luteranos de Michigan (una filial de los Servicios L 
uteranos de Inmigración y Refugiados y de los ministerios (EMM) de Detroi t, 
MI, muestran a un propietario que ha proporcionado a los refugiados rent as 
reducidas y renunció a los depósitos de seguridad con el fin de faci litar que 
se instalaran rápidamente.

Sobre EMM

Los ministerios (EMM) ayudan cada año a miles de refugiados, en colaborac ión 
con grupos religiosos y voluntarios que ayudan a estos recién llega dos a 
encontrar trabajo y a adaptarse a la vida de su comunidad. Como tal,  los 
ministerios (EMM) han recibido en EE.UU. a refugiados de todo el mundo  - del 
sudeste de Asia, países del antiguo bloque del Este y de la Unión  Soviética, 
de Cuba, Liberia, Sudán, Ruanda y Sierra Leona, Bosnia y Ko sovo, Afganistán, y 
más recientemente de Colombia, la República Democ rática del Congo, Burundi, 
Bután, Birmania e Irak.

Con una red de 35 oficinas afiliadas ubicadas en 27 diócesis, los ministe rios 
(EMM) se basan en gran medida en el apoyo de las iglesias para acoger  a los 
refugiados en EE.UU. Además diócesis, parroquias y personas a men udo
