âWeâre not sure if it will get to the sanctuary, but we saved everything
that we could.â â The Rev. Debra Ball-Kilbourne, Faith United Methodist
   Church, Minot, N.D.

Verdicts split in DeLong clergy trial

KAUKAUNA, Wis. (UMNS) â A jury of 13 United Methodist pastors has found the
Rev. Amy DeLong guilty of performing a same-sex union â a violation of the
denominationâs laws â and not guilty of being a "self-avowed practicing
homosexual." The verdicts came in a church trial that began June 21 at Peace
United Methodist Church. The jury was unanimous in the guilty verdict and
voted 12-1 on the not-guilty ruling. Afterward, the jurors began
deliberating in the penalty phase of the trial.
The United Methodist Churchâs Book of Discipline forbids clergy from
performing same-gender union services, and it bars the ordination of
âself-avowed practicing homosexualsâ in the denomination. DeLong has been a
clergy member in Wisconsin for 14 years and is currently director of an
advocacy group. In 2009, she agreed to officiate at a service for a lesbian
couple, and she and her longtime partner registered under Wisconsinâs
Domestic Partnership Law. UMNS is providing ongoing coverage of the church
   court proceedings.

United Methodists help evacuate Minot

MINOT, N.D. (UMNS) â Teams of North Dakota United Methodists were helping
evacuate residents of Minot as floodwaters threatened the city June 22. âThe
river is rising quite steadily, and thereâs going to be some definite issues
with 11,000 people trying to get out at one time,â said the Rev. Lee
Gale, [20]North Dakota disaster response coordinator for the United
   Methodist Dakotas Annual (regional) Conference.

Hospices meet people needs with pet care

MIDLAND, Texas (UMNS) â Cassidy, a small, three-legged dog, belonged to a
caring, elderly man. But when the man became terminally ill and entered
hospice, Cassidyâs fate was in jeopardy. This uncertainty weighed heavily on
the owner. Sharon Wetz, a volunteer at Hospice of Midland, helped the man
find rest through Pet Peace of Mind, an organization that cares for pets or
finds foster homes for them while the animalsâ owners are in hospice.

Methodists Jim Winkler, Board of Church and Society, and the Rev. Stephen J.
Sidorak Jr., Commission on Christian Unity and Interreligious Concerns â
sent a letter to President Obama ahead of a June 22 televised speech in
which he is expected to announce U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan."It

Northern Illinois Conference supports Hyatt boycott

CHICAGO (UMNS) â After 20 months of negotiations, hotel workers went on a
daylong strike June 20 at the Hyatt Regency Chicago. Hundreds of religious
leaders affiliated with Interfaith Worker Justice are joining the workers on
the picket lines. Members of the United Methodist Northern Illinois Annual
(regional) Conference voted during their June 8-11 meeting to join the Hyatt
Hotels boycott until settlements of the labor disputes are achieved.
