"My prayer is that, as Christians and as United Methodists, we will use this
experience as a gateway to reconciliation, healing and restoration of our
relationship with one another and with Christ." - Bishop Linda Lee,
   Wisconsin Annual (regional) Conference.

Lesbian elder's penalty takes different path

KAUKAUNA, Wis. (UMNS) - For the first time in 20 years, a conviction for
performing a same-sex union has not resulted in a United Methodist elder's
defrocking or indefinite suspension. Instead, after seven hours of
deliberations, a jury of 13 United Methodist clergy voted 9-4 to suspend the
Rev. Amy DeLong from her ministerial functions for 20 days beginning July 1.
The jury, or trial court, also sentenced DeLong to a more detailed process
for a year after her suspension to "restore the broken clergy covenant
relationship." At least seven votes from the trial court of five women and
eight men were required to approve a penalty.

Few clergy lose credentials in public cases

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) - On at least six previous occasions in the past 20
years, disciplinary action against United Methodist clergy accused of
violations of the discipline or law of The United Methodist Church has taken
place in a public forum. It is possible that more than six such cases have
occurred. However, the accused person determines whether the accusations and
trial will be made public. Here is a brief overview.

N.D. floodwaters overwhelm Faith church

MINOT, N.D. (UMNS) - As record floodwaters poured into Minot, teams of
United Methodists continued to help with evacuations despite personal
hardship. The Rev. Lee Gale, disaster response coordinator for the
[23]Dakotas Annual (regional) Conference, reported the basement of [24]Faith
United Methodist Church covered by floodwater and the water still rising. He
said congregants met at the church, acknowledging they will lose their
building. "They had a prayer on the front step before the water got too
awfully deep," Gale said. "It's kind of a sad day."

U.N. to look at rights of older persons

NEW YORK (UMNS) - When the [26]Agewell Foundation talked to older people in
India, the organization found the biggest concern was being marginalized by
family and society. An Agewell study published in April found that a basic
lack of awareness "is one of the major reasons of ever-increasing cases of
violation of human rights of older persons." That lack of awareness,
multiplied across the globe, is probably one of the best reasons for the
United Nations to organize a convention on the rights of older people, says
Susanne Paul of [27]Global Action on Aging.

NCC seeks nominations for interfaith engagement

NEW YORK (UMNS) - The [29]National Council of Churches Interfaith Relations
Commission plans to recognize congregations that engage with communities of
other faiths. The NCC's Interfaith Engaged Congregational Initiative is
receiving nominations for congregations that "have something important to
share about interfaith engagement." A printable brochure and nomination form
   [30]can be downloaded here.
The nomination form can also [31]be filled out online here.

Claremont to set up global Methodism center

CLAREMONT, Calif. (UMNS) - A new Center for Global Methodism will be
established at [32]Claremont School of Theology. "The school is the ideal
site for the center," President Jerry Campbell said June 21. "We are a
United Methodist-related school, the Christian partner within the
interreligious Claremont Lincoln University consortium, and located in an
area that reflects the multitude of cultures and religions of the world
   within which Methodism must function."

Daughter of Iliff co-founder dies

DENVER (UMNS) - The daughter of a co-founder of [33]Iliff School of
Theology, a United Methodist seminary, died June 9, the Denver Post
reported. Alberta Shattuck was 101. The Post said Shattuck had attended
Iliff board meetings until a few years ago. A service for her in the school
   chapel will be June 30.
